NFL Power Rankings Week 7: Which Teams Are Most Complete in League?

Andrea HangstOct 20, 2011

There are a number of strong teams in the NFL, to be sure, but even the top squad in the league cannot be said to be the most complete.

Complete means balanced; a balanced team doesn't necessarily have the flashiest quarterback, the hardest-hitting defense or the most receivers. However, they do have all of the components to win both now and to sustain those winning ways as the season wears on.

The Baltimore Ravens are practically the prototype for a balanced team. It's clear that's been their mission, even while gutting its veteran core and building up younger players in the offseason.

Quarterback Joe Flacco looks to have renewed life as a game-driving passer, with his younger receivers' assistance. Running back Ray Rice is one of the best in the league. Meanwhile, their defense continues to live up to the reputation its made for itself over many brutal seasons.

What's more, that defense isn't one-dimensional—they can defend both the pass and the run, either at the line of scrimmage or in the second level, with practically the same high level of success.

It looks like the San Francisco 49ers are also one of the most complete and balanced teams in the NFL this season, after years of struggling to even gain one win.

Head coach Jim Harbaugh has taken what was already there and turned it into a winning squad. Those pieces were almost entirely in place once Harbaugh took over. However, with his guidance and his players' compliance, the team has been elevated into one of the league's best.

However, all of the early-season wins don't matter if that momentum cannot be sustained well into the season, when injuries and the weekly grind starts to take its toll. Without balance, the fight is that much harder and weaknesses are that much more difficult to overcome.
