NFL Picks Week 7: New York Jets and 3 Home Teams That Should Worry

Eric BowmanOct 20, 2011

The NFL regular season is almost at the halfway point, and several teams need to start improving or the playoffs will soon be out of the picture.

Multiple home teams this weekend are in danger of losing in their house, which would put a damper on their season.

Every week there are surprises in the NFL, and there's likely to be some big comeback victory on Sunday because it appears to be a reoccurring theme this season.

Several teams need to turn things around, and if they don't start this weekend they'll be in a world of hurt. There aren't a ton of great matchups, but Week 7 will still produce some good games.

Here are three home teams that should be worried on Sunday.

New York Jets

The Jets finally ended their losing streak this past weekend, but now they have the difficult task of hosting a well-rested San Diego Chargers team.

Rex Ryan's Super Bowl guarantee isn't looking too good right now, but a win over the Chargers will give New York great confidence.

However, San Diego is fresh off a bye and it knows it's time to stop being slow and start delivering a punch. The Chargers' division just got a whole lot more interesting with Carson Palmer joining the Oakland Raiders, which means San Diego needs every non-division win it can get.

The Jets defense will be the difference-maker in this game, but Mark Sanchez and the offense still need to shine in the big games. They'll have their hands full on Sunday, but they should do just enough to get by.

Philip Rivers will make plays, but in the end it's going to be the Jets defense that saves the day. That still doesn't change the fact that New York should be worried because if it does lose this game, it's going to be hard for the Jets to build a good run over the next few weeks.

Prediction: Jets 26, Chargers 20

Detroit Lions

The surprise Lions got their first loss of the season last Sunday, but they need to forget about it and move on or else they're doomed.

The Atlanta Falcons come into town on Sunday afternoon, and while they have no answer for Calvin Johnson, the Lions will struggle to slow down Michael Turner.

The Falcons run game will open up the pass and allow Matt Ryan to make smart decisions. Atlanta will need its secondary to come through, which won't be easy.

The Lions also need to worry because the health of leading rusher Jahvid Best is uncertain, which means they'll be somewhat one-dimensional as they focus heavily on the pass. That doesn't typically end well for teams.

Detroit's defense is improving, but being ranked 27th against the run shows that Turner will have success, and that is why the Lions need to be concerned. I see the Falcons winning a close one and finally playing good football on the road.

Prediction: Falcons 27, Lions 20

Tennessee Titans

The Titans host their division rival in the Houston Texans, and they desperately need this victory. In fact, both teams do, which is why this game will be one of the best on Sunday.

The AFC South is there for taking, and the Titans have a great chance of stealing from the favored Texans. A win on Sunday would give them a boost in confidence and put them in the right direction in the division.

Matt Hasselbeck has been a big surprise this season, as well as Chris Johnson. Unfortunately, Johnson's is in a negative way as he has yet to burst for big runs like his old self. I guess that's what happens once you get paid the mega bucks.

Still, though, the Titans need to be apprehensive about Sunday because if they lose it will be harder to edge out the Texans for the division crown, which is likely the only way Tennessee is making the playoffs.

I give the edge to Houston because Arian Foster will have a great day, and the Texans are going to bring their A-game to avoid a third straight loss.

Prediction: Texans 28, Titans 23
