Will Smith and the Best Celebrity Sports Team Owners

Jeff ChaseOct 20, 2011

With the ongoing NBA labor talks, Hollywood A-lister Will Smith decided it was the best time to invest in an NBA team. So what team did the Fresh Prince decide to go with? Well, it wasn't the one near Bel-Air, but rather the one he came from, Philadelphia.

The Philadelphia 76ers' new owner is going to have to wait sometime now, at least until the lockout is resolved, to get out there and enjoy his recent purchase. Smith, though, is a little late to get into the game, and most would argue at the wrong time.

Here is a look at the other top celebrity sports team owners Mr. Smith will be joining.

New Jersey (Brooklyn?) Nets Owner Jay-Z

They call him Hova.

Part-owner of the New Jersey Nets, Jay-Z has been one of the more fan favorite team owners. He is still planning on bringing the Nets over to Brooklyn, a project he hopes to have complete in the next few years.

Jay-Z unfortunately didn't buy into a franchise that has been doing too well, especially after missing out on LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Carmelo Anthony. In the end, he got his guy in Deron Williams, and he can only hope that it is just the beginning of a turn around in New Jersey. Or Brooklyn. Wherever.

Cleveland Cavaliers Owner Usher

Can't argue much with Usher. Besides for the fact that he put Justin Bieber out to ruin the world, but I suppose we can let him slide on that one.

Usher took part ownership in Cleveland Cavaliers in 2005, so luckily for him he cashed in during the LeBron James days. Now, things are not looking as good for when he made his initial investment, but he can only hope that Kyrie Irving will lead his team into the bright lights once again.

South Sydney Rabittohs Owner Russel Crowe

Russel Crowe loves to fight. No wonder he owns a rugby team.

I don't know much about rugby, but I do know that Crowe at least picked a team with a pretty awesome name.

Also, he was Gladiator. I can't deny the guy a spot on this list.

Seattle Sounders Owner Drew Carey

Come on down! "The Price is Right" host would have been assumed to take a team from Cleveland, but instead Drew Carey ended up with a soccer team in Seattle. Don't ask me how.

Anyways, I like Carey a lot. He was an entertaining guy throughout the '90s, and he was good enough to follow up Bob Barker.

Philadelphia 76ers Owner Will Smith

I like Will Smith. I think he is funny and really talented in all the roles he takes. I also now think he may not be too bright.

Chances are, he got a deal with his purchase of the 76ers, but it just doesn't seem like the best time to make such a move. It isn't looking too pretty with the NBA lockout, so why even get involved? Obviously, the NBA is due to get things started within the next three years, but still I think Smith could have waited a little while more before making this decision.

Charlotte Bobcats Owner Michael Jordan

Celebrities and athletes are the same thing. That being said, Charlotte Bobcats' majority owner Michael Jordan makes this list.

Jordan, of course known as being arguably the greatest basketball player of all time (he was), took quite some time to finally make an impact off the court. He got his feet wet with the Washington Wizards, but in the end found himself back in his hometown owning their new team following the sale from former owner Robert Johnson.

The Miami Dolphins

7 of 7

The Miami Dolphins are owned by a plethora of celebrities. While Stephen Ross owns about 95 percent of the team and Wayne Huizenga owns about 5 percent, less than I guess 1 percent is owned by these celebrities: musical artists Marc Anthony, Jennifer Lopez, Emilio Estefan, Gloria Estefan and Fergie. Other owners are tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams.

Obviously, these celebrities don't provide much to this ownership group other than a little star power.
