College Football Bowl Season Analysis: Danny's NCAA Football Update
Okay, so first off, it was wishful thinking that Oklahoma would lose to Missouri. I was just dreaming of a controversy-filled Oregon/Oklahoma rematch in the Holiday Bowl.
Oh, well. Enough about that.
Lets talk about the bowl matchups. Right off the bat, the most intriguing matchup to me is easily Alabama and Utah in the Sugar Bowl. Here's why: The outcome of this bowl could alter the college football landscape as we know it. The outcome of this game could also become the biggest screaming proof ever that we need a playoff.
Here's how: Close your eyes and imagine for a minute that Utah travels down to New Orleans and beats 12-1 SEC West Champ Alabama in the Sugar Bowl. I'm talking about the Alabama team that was within less than one quarter away from a perfect season and a trip the national championship.
That would be huge. It would scream that, from this point forward, certain teams such as Utah and Boise State would have to be taken seriously in the national title picture, just as much as USC or Florida.
I'm not talking about all mid-majors, but we would have to concede that a certain few undefeated lower-tier teams (Utah, Boise State,TCU and maybe Fresno State) should have just as much a right to a BCS game, including the national title game, as any other power from a major conference.
To me, this would scream that we need a 16-team playoff more than anything.
Other bowl matchups that are worth checking out:
Florida Vs Oklahoma (National Title Game)
I see Florida winning this by one or two possessions. Two results from this: 1) SEC fans will get to annoy everyone with their ignorant bragging for another year and 2) Oklahoma will never get shown favor in BCS consideration again. Third time better be the charm for the Sooners.
USC Vs Penn State (Rose Bowl)
I see USC winning 34-13. And we will never know how good this defense could have done against Texas, Florida, or Oklahoma in a national title game. Damn the stupid BCS again! Also, the Big Ten may get replaced by the Mountain West or the WAC if they don't manage to win a BCS game this year, because I also seriously doubt Ohio State is gonna touch Texas.
Georgia Vs Michigan State (Capital One Bowl)
I see this as Michigan State having an outside chance to win, thus possibly giving the Big Ten the right to brag that a team from Michigan beat a SEC East power for the second bowl season in a row.
Other games to keep an eye on:
Oregon Vs Oklahoma State (Holiday Bowl)
Miami Vs California (Emerald Bowl)
The above matchups are the don't-miss games in an otherwise below-average bowl season. We really need playoffs.
