Redskins vs. Panthers: TV Schedule, Live Streaming, Radio, Game Time and More

Adam WellsOct 19, 2011

The Washington Redskins take their surprising 3-2 record on the road in Week 7 trying to get back on track against rookie quarterback Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers.

The Redskins had a disastrous game against division rival Philadelphia last week, and they need to settle their quarterback situation (which will be led by John Beck this week) if they want to stay in contention the remainder of the season.

Rex Grossman had a strong start to the season, but his four interceptions last week spelled doom and John Beck was put in a game for the first time since 2007.

The Panthers have not been winning games this season, but they have improved exponentially compared to where they were last season. Newton has re-energized the offense, Steve Smith looks like a new man and the running game is slowly coming around. They are going to give a lot of teams fits over the final 10 weeks.

What’s At Stake?

The Redskins need a win to keep their spirits high and stay in contention in the NFC East. No one would have guessed that they would be 3-2 after five games, but they can’t afford to lose any more games considering the teams in the division are all within one game of each other.

The Panthers have played well this season but do not have a lot of wins to show for it. In fact, they only have one win thus far.

They have played a brutal schedule up to this point, including games against Green Bay, at Chicago, against New Orleans and at Atlanta, so this game will be a step down in competition. This team is still rebuilding, but it would be nice for their confidence just to get a win some time soon.

What They Are Saying

Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan has a controversy of the worst kind in his hands: He needs a starting quarterback. The team is likely to be fluctuating quarterbacks all season long, but he believes in both Rex Grossman and John Beck.

"

On Wednesday the decision will be made based on who’s going to start, best interest of our organization. I have not made up my mind right now. I have talked to our coaches, but just to get their opinions...You go through game situations, go through all the games, you look at who’s going to be active, who gives you the best chance to win. We’ll constantly do that, and that will never change.”

"

Panthers head coach Ron Rivera has not had the kind of success this season that he was hoping for, but the team is getting better and he sees the progress that has been made in the first six games of the season.

"

"I've got to come in with the right attitude because I've got a group of guys that we've got to keep ... focused and get them to realize that we are getting better. We're going to win. And when we do, I'm telling you, it's going to be great."

Redskins Player To Watch: Ryan Torain, RB

Even with John Beck starting at quarterback, the running game has to lead the offensive attack. Ryan Torain should see an increased workload this week, after carrying the ball just 10 times against the Eagles.

Torain has to dominate the Panthers’ 31st ranked run defense in order to keep Cam Newton and Steve Smith off the field and give the Redskins a chance to win this game.

Panthers Player To Watch: Cam Newton, QB

Cam Newton has been the most exciting rookie quarterback that we have seen in a long time. He hit a wall against Atlanta last week by throwing three interceptions, but still completed 21-of-35 passes for 237 yards.

The Panthers are going to win as many games this season as Newton is going to lead them to. The defense is still rebuilding and giving up a lot of yards —349 per game to be exact —so the offense has to carry them. Newton is the glue that holds everything together, so his success or failure will be the team’s success or failure.

Key Matchup: John Beck vs. Carolina Secondary

I did just say that Ryan Torain has to lead the Redskins' offense, but for the team to be successful the remainder of the season they have to find some stability at the quarterback position.

John Beck has not started a game in the NFL since 2007, so he has to get used to the speed of the game and opposing defenses. He has a good matchup with a bad Carolina defense to do that, but he has to show something in this game to make the team feel confident about the decision to name him the starter.

Prediction

The Panthers are too strong on offense for the Redskins. Their defense is suspect, but with the Redskins’ quarterback situation looking so dire they will not be able to score enough to win this game.
