NFL Week 14 Review: Can Teams Come Back From a Bad Week?

Thomas MorelandDec 7, 2008

Some big upsets gave some teams hope for the rest of the season, or perhaps something to look forward to next season.

Lets look at  Week 14 and all the playoff implications.

As you can see by the photo, Tono Romo and the Cowboys choked away a victory in Pittsburgh on Sunday. They had this game through 3 quarters, but unfortunately, you have to play four quarters. An interception sealed their fate with two minutes to go in the game. Romo threw a horrible pass, and Pittsburgh raced it in for the go ahead score. Pittsburgh 20 Dallas 13. The Steelers are 10-3.

Philadelphia inched closer to Dallas in the standings, beating the Giants 20-14. Philadelphia is now 7-5-1. Dallas is 8-5 and still has a wild card in the NFC.

Chicago kept pace with Minnesota as they both won . Chicago beat Jacksonville 23-10. Gus Frerotte went down with a back injury, but Minnesota beat Detroit 20-16 anyway to keep the division lead by one game.

Green Bay lost anther home game to Houston and fell to 5-8 . That pretty much says it all. If they win out, 8-8 will not win anything this season. Minnesota is 8-5. They play Arizona who has clinched their division at 8-5 also.

Tennessee improved to 12-1 beating Cleveland easily 28-9. Tennessee is on the road next week ,traveling to Houston.  Can you say upset? I thought you could! Take Houston next week in a trap game.

Here's a shocker! The Jets got hammered by the San Francisco Forty Niners 24-14 to drop into a three-way tie with Miami and New England for that division. They are all now 8-5.

Miami beat Buffalo 16-3, while New England escaped Seattle 24-21. New England has the Raiders next week, while the Jets play Buffalo. Miami is at home against the hard playing of late, Forty Niners!

Indianapolis stayed red hot beating Cincinnati 35-3 and improving their record to 9-4. Next week Detroit, Then 10-4. Peyton Manning will be in the playoffs. This has to make other teams very unhappy! Peyton vs. Eli a real possibility as there are no clear cut favorites in the AFC to reach the Super Bowl.

Atlanta took a shot to the gut in a loss to New Orleans 29-25. Atlanta plays Tampa Bay at home in a season defining game next week. A loss there, and it will tough to get a wild card berth.

Denver just about has their division. they won over Kansas City 24-17 and improved to 8-5 in that weak AFC West. San Diego is a distant 5-8. Followed by the 3-10 Raiders and the 2-11 Seahawks. It is unlikely Denver will lose their last three games, and San Diego wins their last three.

If Denver loses two in a row, and San Diego wins two in a row, they play in the final game of the season. That is kind of interesting. Denver travels to Carolina this week, while San Diego gets Kansas City, hmm. Denver's best chance to put away that division probably is in week 16. Carolina is very tough at home.

As I already mentioned , Arizona clinched their division, winning over the Rams 34-10. Arizona improves their record to 8-5 and plays Minnesota next week. They may start to rest some personnel, as they are guaranteed a home playoff game, by winning their division.

This Week, I am currently 11-4 if Baltimore beats Washington, as I have predicted.

This puts me at a very respectable 135-73-1 for the season.

I have also predicted Carolina wins a close one Monday night against The Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Good luck to all your teams, and have a safe and happy holiday season!
