Fantasy Football Week 7: Aaron Rodgers, Calvin Johnson and 5 Fantasy Locks

Mike ChiariOct 19, 2011

As important as it is to have production throughout your fantasy lineup, it's always a huge advantage when you studs put up big numbers. There's a reason why certain players go in the first and second rounds, and that's so they can anchor your team.

Several big-time fantasy players are in position to do just that in Week 7. While anything can happen in the NFL, there quite a few players that you can feel extremely good about having in your lineup this weekend.

Here are five players who are virtual locks to put up big number in Week 7.

Drew Brees: QB, New Orleans Saints

1 of 5

Despite throwing for 383 yards last week against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, New Orleans Saints quarterback had a rough go of it, as he threw three interceptions. He is line for a big-time bounce back this weekend, however, when the Saints fave the winless Indianapolis Colts on Sunday night.

Brees has thrown for over 350 yards in four consecutive games and has thrown for multiple touchdown passes in four of his six games this season. He has had a bit of an interception problem with a 13:8 touchdowns to interceptions ratio, but he is still unquestionably one of the league's most consistent fantasy performers.

The Colts are worse against the run than they are against the pass, but it isn't as if they have been shutting down opposing passing games. Provided the New Orleans offensive line can neutralize Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis, Brees should have plenty of time to sit in the pocket and pick apart the defense, and he will.

Projection: 320 yards, 3 touchdowns, 1 interception

Mike Wallace: WR, Pittsburgh Steelers

2 of 5

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Mike Wallace has certainly lived up to the hype he created last season, with 612 receiving yards and four touchdowns through just six games this year. Wallace raced out of the gates with three straight 100-yard games, and while he has stabilized a bit, he has still been excellent.

Wallace caught just two passes against the Jacksonville Jaguars last week, but he totaled 76 yards and caught a touchdown. While Wallace is a big-play receiver, he still have the potential to make five or six catches in a given game, so he has value in PPR formats.

He will have an excellent matchup on Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals, who have been very suspect against the pass this season. Arizona has struggled against speed receivers such as the Carolina Panthers' Steve Smith, who absolutely burned them on opening day. Look for Wallace to get loose deep a couple times and have a great game.

Projection: 5 catches, 130 yards, 2 touchdowns

Michael Turner: RB, Atlanta Falcons

3 of 5

Although he has less than 20 carries in half of his six games this season, Atlanta Falcons running back Michael Turner has performed quite admirably with 499 rushing yards and six touchdowns. Luckily for his fantasy owners, the Falcons seemed to realize that he had to be better utilized last weekend.

Turner pounded the rock 27 times for 139 yards and two scores against the Carolina Panthers' weak run defense. This performance came on the heels of three games with 70 yards or less, with Atlanta losing two of those three games.

Atlanta's best chance to win is clearly to have Turner carry the ball between 20 and 30 times in order to open up the passing game for quarterback Matt Ryan. The Falcons will take on a Detroit Lions team that has had a difficult time against the run in recent weeks, so Turner should receive plenty of opportunities to do some damage, and I expect plenty of success.

Projection: 125 rushing yards, 2 touchdowns

Calvin Johnson: WR, Detroit Lions

4 of 5

No wide receiver, and perhaps no offensive player, has been more dominant this season than the Detroit Lions' Calvin Johnson. With his immense size and blazing speed Johnson is a matchup nightmare for every team he faces, and that much is apparent simply by looking at his numbers.

Johnson has caught touchdowns in five of his six games this season and has caught multiple touchdowns in four contests. Last week was the first game in which Johnson failed to catch a touchdown, but it still may have been his most impressive performance to date with seven grabs for 113 yards.

He has a date with one of the NFL's worst pass defenses this weekend when the Lions take on the Atlanta Falcons. The Falcons' secondary has been absolutely torched this season by lesser receivers than Johnson, so I shudder to think what he could do. Even if Atlanta commits extra defenders to him, he is capable of beating two even three players for the ball, so he should have a monster game.

Projection: 6 catches, 135 yards, 2 touchdowns

Aaron Rodgers: QB, Green Bay Packers

5 of 5

From the "Captain Obvious" department, Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is the best fantasy quarterback, and maybe the best fantasy player in the game, and he should be in your lineup each every week save for when he is on a bye.

Rodgers has fallen short of 300 yards in a game just once this season (297 yards against Chicago), and he has thrown for multiple touchdowns in each and every contest. Also, while Rodgers hasn't run as much as he has in recent seasons, he is a threat to rack up points on the ground with two touchdown runs.

Regardless of who he plays, it is always going to be a good matchup for Rodgers, but he should have an absolute field day against the Minnesota Vikings. The Vikings are solid against the run, so I don't think Green Bay will even bother using the ground game much. That will only bode well for Rodgers as he should be slinging the ball all over the field.

Projection: 350 passing yards, 3 touchdowns, 20 rushing yards
