Week 7 Start 'Em, Sit 'Em: Drew Brees and 4 QBs You Must Start
There are two reasons to start a fantasy quarterback: He's a week-in, week-out stellar performer, or he's up against a matchup too promising to pass up.
In the following slides, I will detail four quarterbacks set to have big days for your fantasy team—two who are no-brainer must-starts and two whose Week 7 opponents make them a worthwhile play, though, they may not be solid starters every week of the season.
Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints
1 of 4Drew Brees is a must-start fantasy quarterback every week, but this is an especially good week for the quarterback, as the New Orleans Saints host the Indianapolis Colts Sunday night.
The Colts have one of the most dismal pass defenses in the league, and they've yet to see an offense as powerful as the Saints' thus far this season.
Brees, who has completed 68.6 percent of his passes this season for 2,152 yards and 13 touchdowns, is averaging 357.8 yards per game. It's not hard to imagine him meeting or surpassing that average and tossing at least two touchdown passes against Indianapolis this week.
If Brees is your starting fantasy quarterback, you're likely to get a great performance out of him in Week 7.
Colt McCoy, Cleveland Browns
2 of 4Browns quarterback Colt McCoy hasn't proven himself as much more than a fantasy QB2 so far this season, though, he's been throwing a high volume of passes—at least 32 and as many as 61 per game.
But this week, his team hosts the Seattle Seahawks, a team far superior in defending the run than they are the pass. Considering also that he's got himself a far better No. 1 target in wide receiver Greg Little, who was named a starter last week, and the odds are looking good for McCoy to have a solid fantasy outing on Sunday.
With a number of big-name fantasy quarterbacks on the bye this week, McCoy is an excellent replacement start in Week 7.
Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers
3 of 4The stars have aligned once again for the Packers' Aaron Rodgers, as his team faces their second struggling team in as many weeks.
There's certainly no question that Rodgers will perform well every week, it's just a matter of how well. And while the Minnesota Vikings' pass defense hasn't struggled as much as their offensive counterpart, there's little chance of them being effective enough to stop the NFL's leading passer this Sunday.
Rodgers has 2,031 passing yards and 17 touchdowns while throwing only three interceptions. He's also rushed 27 times for 67 yards and two scores, proving that in clutch situations, Rodgers can make significant plays with his legs.
That 338.5 yard-per-game average is likely to increase after the Packers are through dispatching the Vikings this week. Look forward to a high-scoring day if Rodgers is your fantasy quarterback.
Tony Romo, Dallas Cowboys
4 of 4Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo has become one of the riskiest fantasy starts of 2011, with his inconsistent play costing his fantasy owners a win or leading them to victory with little warning.
But sometimes the matchup is just too choice to let Romo languish on the bench, and such is the case this week when the Cowboys take on the St. Louis Rams.
The Rams have one of the worst secondaries in the NFL, while Romo is coming off of a solid showing in his team's Week 6 loss against the New England Patriots that saw him complete 27 of his 41 attempts for 317 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
The feast-or-famine fantasy quarterback will likely give your team a glut of points this week. While it's difficult for his owners to feel comfortable starting him, I recommend giving him the nod in Week 7. He's likely to disappoint you again this season, but it won't happen this Sunday at least.
