NFL Trade Deadline: Ronnie Brown, Carson Palmer and Biggest Deadline Day Winners

Donald WoodOct 19, 2011

With the 2011 NFL Trade Deadline now behind us, it’s time to reflect on which teams made the best moves and which players will benefit most from these blockbuster moves.

While many franchises that needed to make a move sat on their hands instead of improving their team, a few bright-eyed teams went all in and decided to improve their squads greatly.

Teams like the Oakland Raiders and Detroit Lions knew they couldn’t afford to sit back and do nothing, and the players they acquired will do nothing but make their teams better.

Carson Palmer

The Oakland Raiders paid too much for the Pro-Bowl quarterback, but the truth is you won’t know if it’s worth it until Palmer gets on the field for the Raiders.

Palmer was in the conversation as one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL, and with a potent run game like the one in Oakland, Palmer should have plenty of room to make plays.

While his impact may be slow at first, it will get better over time, and he is still light years ahead of Kyle Boller.

There was no future for Ronnie Brown in Philadelphia with LeSean McCoy running the ball, and the Detroit Lions made the smart move by going after him.

The Lions like running the ball between the tackles and using stronger backs in short yardage situations, and that’s the kind of running back Brown has always been.

With a second concussion to starting running back Jahvid Best, the move to get Ronnie Brown shows just how concerned the team is with Best’s injury issues.

Brandon Lloyd

While the St. Louis Rams aren’t going anywhere this season, this trade will give Josh McDaniels and the team an inside chance of signing the soon-to-be free agent to an extension.

McDaniels was the coach of the Denver Broncos last season, and it was his schemes that turned the journeyman wide receiver into a Pro-Bowl selection.

Lloyd will sign in St. Louis for less money because he knows his best chance of success will be with McDaniels and the Rams offense.
