NFL Trade Rumors: Philadelphia Eagles Got Better End of Ronnie Brown Trade

Michael MillOct 19, 2011

With the NFL trade deadline closing in, there was anticipation in the city of brotherly love.

There had been rumors floating around all day that cornerback Asante Samuel was being shopped and could be on his way out of Philadelphia by the end of the day.

Eagles fans talked about what the team might be able to receive in return.

Most of the ideas consisted of draft picks or possible linebackers that could be on their way to Philadelphia.

With roughly 20 minutes remaining until the deadline, word came out that the Eagles had come to terms with a team for a trade.

The player that would be leaving wasn't Asante Samuel, but running back Ronnie Brown.

Brown signed a one-year deal with the team, and fans hoped he would bring in the power running style to help in short yardage situations.

His impact up until now has been less than impressive. His 2.9 yards per carry on 13 attempts puts Brown at a staggeringly low 38 yards this season.

He is best known in Philly for the goal line fumble he had in week four against the 49ers.

The conditions of the trade sent Brown to Detroit for running back Jerome Harrison and a seventh round draft pick in 2013.

Harrison was with the Eagles last year, and played decent during his time there. His 239 rushing yards on a 6.0 average with the team was commendable as a backup.

The trade is extremely insignificant, but it appears that Philadelphia got the better end of the deal.

The Eagles traded their third string running back for an equally talented player and a draft pick.

Yes, I did say third string. In case you didn't notice, Dion Lewis received all of the carries at backup running back the last two weeks. Brown lost his spot after the fumble.

Sure, the draft pick is nothing special.

If the Eagles find another Tom Brady with that pick, then this trade may have some significance. Until then, it's really a toss up.
