NFL Trade Rumors: Which Teams Will Kick Themselves For Not Adding Asante Samuel?

Zach KruseOct 18, 2011

According to Jason La Canfora of the NFL Network, the Philadelphia Eagles dangled cornerback Asante Samuel in trade talks this afternoon on the final day NFL teams could make trades this regular season.

Here's what La Canfora tweeted:

"

"Eagles letting it be known that CB Asante Samuel could be had prior to the trade deadline. Not sure odds of it going down are great but it's certainly possible. Samuel very likely in his last year in Philly. Eagles already loaded with picks though. Need LBs and linemen."

The Eagles made a move shortly after, but it didn't involve Samuel. Philadelphia sent running back Ronnie Brown to the Lions for Jerome Harrison and a conditional pick.

If the Eagles decide to hold onto Samuel, there are several teams who would be missing out on the Pro Bowl corner's services.

Here's the list:

Detroit Lions

If there is a contending team that could use the most help at cornerback, it might be the Lions. While they haven't gotten bad play from their secondary, they could benefit from adding a cover guy like Samuel. And with the way the Lions attack quarterback with their defensive line, Samuel could get his opportunistic hands on a few passes.

New England Patriots

A reunion with the Pats might have benefited both sides, as the secondary in New England has some holes that Samuel could have filled. I'm not sure they could have come to deal, but it would have been worth looking into.

Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys were also a long shot, as the two teams play in the same division. But Dallas certainly could have used a cover guy of Samuel's skill. While he's never going to add anything in run support, that's not what the Cowboys need him for.
