Ronnie Brown Trade: Brown Acquisition Gives Lions' Jahvid Best Insurance

Zachary D. RymerOct 18, 2011

The Detroit Lions have one of the league's most ineffective rushing attacks, but it just got a boost at the NFL's trade deadline.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Lions have made a trade for a certain Philadelphia Eagles running back.

No, not LeSean McCoy. The other guy:

It's not a surprise that the Eagles would be willing to part with Brown. For a brief time he was one of the league's best running backs, but he's closer to the end of his career than he is to the beginning. To boot, the Eagles barely used Brown this year, as he has just 13 carries for 38 yards all season.

The trade also makes sense for the Lions. Running back depth has been an issue for them ever since rookie back Mikel Leshoure tore his Achilles during training camp. That left Jahvid Best to be Detroit's primary back, and he too has come down with an injury.

In case you missed it, Best suffered a concussion during Detroit's 25-19 loss to the San Francisco 49ers and his status for Week 7 is uncertain. Lions head coach Jim Schwartz said on Tuesday (per the Detroit Free Press) that Best could play on Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons, but he also acknowledged that Best will need medical clearance.

Said Schwartz of Best:

"

He just needs to pass all his things. But again, it’s a very objective test by neutral doctors. It’s a hot topic in the NFL over the last couple years, and I admire the NFL for the stance that they’ve taken for the long-term health of players. Concussions aren’t ignored anymore. Guys are very aware of what the symptoms are.

"

If Best is unable to go on Sunday, the Lions will rest easy knowing that they have both Brown and Maurice Morris, who gained 20 yards on five carries against the 49ers.

If Best is able to go, things are even better for the Lions. They'll have Best and his explosive ways, and they'll have depth behind him.

As such, you have to hand it to the Lions. This is a good trade, and one that they needed to make.
