NFL Trade Deadline: Carson Palmer Makes Oakland Raiders Super Bowl Contenders

Donald WoodOct 18, 2011

The Oakland Raiders have a stellar defense and a dangerous run game already, and now they have the quarterback in Carson Palmer that can make them the most dangerous team in the AFC.

With the potential season-ending surgery on the shoulder of starting quarterback Jason Campbell, the Raiders felt they had no choice but to make a move that would make Al Davis proud.

The organization felt they were close enough to a serious playoff push to give up two very expensive draft picks to the Cincinnati Bengals in return for the disgruntled Palmer.

Adam Schefter is reporting about the compensation the Raiders will be giving the Cincinnati Bengals for Palmer’s services:

While the price seems very steep, and it is, there hasn’t been a deadline deal recently that could have as much impact on the Super Bowl picture as this move does.

The Raiders go from a team that was predicated on a run game with a quarterback that was told to not lose the game to an offense with a stellar running game that can ask their quarterback to get them a win in crunch time.

Carson Palmer is a Pro-Bowl quarterback, and it was an issue with the ownership that gave him all this extra time off, not an injury. Not only is this the best move at the trade deadline, this would’ve been the best move in free agency this season.

In one day, the Oakland Raiders went from possibly backing into the playoffs to being a serious Super Bowl contender.
