NFL Trade Rumors: Broncos and Tim Tebow Need Eddie Royal To Stay in Denver

Michael DixonOct 18, 2011

With yesterday's news that the Broncos traded top receiver Brandon Lloyd to the Rams, Denver seems to be giving up on the season.

It makes sense, they are 1-4 in a division with the 4-1 Chargers and 4-2 Raiders. As if that wasn't enough, the Broncos have already dropped a home meeting to both clubs, so their already slim chances at coming back on either are diminished.

As was reported by SI.com, the Broncos might also be looking to move receiver Eddie Royal.

Even before Lloyd was dealt to the Rams, ESPN's Adam Schefter also reported at Royal might be on the market.

From one end, it makes sense. Royal is a sparingly used receiver. So, if you can get some draft picks for him, it makes sense.

But there are some problems with this move.

For one, Royal has been a sparingly used receiver with Brandon Lloyd on the team. Now that Lloyd is not an option, it stands to reason that a few more passes would come Royal's way.

Secondly, this is not a team that can be dealing away too many receivers. If they were still planning on going forward with Kyle Orton at quarterback, I would be completely on board with this move.

But starting with Sunday's game in Miami, the Broncos are going to be using Tim Tebow as the quarterback. Tebow has very limited NFL experience, so logic would say that he'll need some help with more experienced receivers.

The team isn't that good anyway. Tebow's chances at putting up a winning record this year were minimal, even if they kept Lloyd. Now, Lloyd is gone, and they are thinking about moving another veteran receiver?

Exactly how is a young quarterback supposed to succeed in that environment? These are guys that Tebow theoretically has a little bit of experience with. Now, both might be traded before he makes his first start of 2011?

Personally, I think the Broncos jumped the gun a little bit with Tebow. I would have given him a few more weeks before starting him.

Still, that's not too important in this situation. But now that the decision has been made to go with the young quarterback, he needs to be given a chance to develop. That means that Tebow needs some familiarity with the players he'll be working with from this point on.
