NFL Trade Rumors: Raiders Don't Need Kyle Orton Screwing Up in Oakland

Donald WoodOct 18, 2011

The Oakland Raiders need help at the quarterback position with the loss of Jason Campbell, but they shouldn’t look to mediocre passer extraordinaire Kyle Orton as the answer.

While the broken collarbone is being very optimistically deemed to be a six-week rehab process for Campbell, the odds are that he will be out for the remainder of the season.

Rumors have swirled about proposed trades to replace the Raiders quarterback, but the worst option of all would be trading for Denver Broncos backup Kyle Orton.

The Broncos are also expected to monitor whether freshly demoted quarterback Kyle Orton draws interest from the Oakland Raiders after they lost starter Jason Campbell for an extended period. Campbell suffered a broken collarbone in the Raiders' 24-17 win against the Cleveland Browns. Although the Raiders are their most-heated rival in the AFC West, the Broncos would be willing to give up Orton in return for a draft pick and relief from the estimated $5 million left on his salary.

Not only is it a bad idea to deal with your division rivals, Orton is not the kind of quarterback you want leading the team going forward. The Raiders are in playoff contention, and like it or not, Orton will keep the Raiders from their chance of making a splash in the postseason.

Orton is a solid quarterback for a bad team, but any team with a future or a chance this season needs to look elsewhere for a quarterback at this point.

The Oakland Raiders would be better off sticking with Kyle Boller than bringing in Orton, and the only team that Orton would fit with would be the Miami Dolphins.

UPDATE: Tuesday, Oct. 18 at 12:59 p.m. EDT by Donald Wood

While it appeared Kyle Orton was an option, the Oakland Raiders have reportedly made the smart move and brought in disgruntled Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer to take the helm of their ship.

While some fans may complain about the picks given up, the Raiders pass offense just went from average to above average and their already potent running game just got that much better.
