NFL Trade Speculation: Which Teams Need to Make a Deadline Move?

John BradfordOct 18, 2011

Six weeks into the season, NFL teams are starting to decide if they will contend this year. As the trade deadline approaches, many teams find themselves with a need to shake up their rosters. Whether these teams are looking to add a final piece or sell off assets, there are moves to be made.

So, let's take a look at which NFL teams need to make a move at the trading deadline.

Oakland Raiders

1 of 8

After the loss of Jason Campbell for what could be the rest of the season, the Oakland Raiders are in need of a quarterback. If the team feels Kyle Boller is good enough to keep them in contention, then they will most likely look for a veteran backup. If not, would the Broncos trade Kyle Orton in division? The Raiders would be stupid not to ask.

Miami Dolphins

2 of 8

The Dolphins find themselves in a strange position as the trade deadline approaches. They have no legitimate option at quarterback nor do they have a young player to give experience.

Kyle Orton trade rumors have been circulating since before the season. If they have any hopes left for this season, that would be the move to make. At this point though, winning the Andrew Luck sweepstakes might be a greater organizational goal than salvaging this season or Tony Sparano’s job.

New York Giants

3 of 8

The bevy of injuries the Giants sustained at the beginning of the season couldn’t have come at a worse time considering the high level Eli Manning is playing at.

Even after the loss of Terrell Thomas and Prince Amukamara, the team has managed to go 4-2. Despite these losses in the secondary, it’s the Giants rush defense that has been the problem this season.

With Osi Umenyiora and Justin Tuck both fighting injuries the Giants should look for depth along the defensive front.

Chicago Bears

If Chicago hopes to compete for the NFC crown, help for Jay Cutler is a necessity. Cutler has once again found himself amongst the league leaders in sacks received and he isn't getting much help from his receivers either.

Running back Matt Forte leads the team in receiving, while Roy Williams has been a major disappointment. The Bears must find some way to upgrade either the line or the receiving corps or this team has gone as far as it can go.

Denver Broncos

5 of 8

For a team out of contention, playing Tim Tebow says everything. The Broncos are clearly alright with seeing what they have in Tebow and accepting the high draft pick if he falls on his face.

What is certain is that Kyle Orton won’t be the Broncos quarterback next season. For that reason, the Broncos need to get value for him now.

After already trading Brandon Lloyd, rumors are circulating that Eddie Royal is also on the block. It’s time to start accumulating draft picks in Denver.

New York Jets

6 of 8

For the Jets, a lack of physicality on both sides of the ball has been the problem. A banged up offensive line has failed to spark the running game and the Jets’ rush defense is among the worst in the league. If New York has any hope this season, they have to find help on both fronts.

Pittsburgh Steelers

7 of 8

For years, the Steelers biggest  issue has been stabilizing the pass protection for Ben Roethlisberger. Once again, Roethlisberger ranks among the league leaders in sacks.

Pittsburgh is also struggling to shut down the run the way it has in years past. An aging Casey Hampton can’t plug up the middle like he used to and depth behind him isn’t what it should be.

The Steelers should look at these issues on the offensive and defensive lines as the deadline approaches.

San Francisco 49ers

8 of 8

The 49ers have found success this season by running the ball and playing defense. Alex Smith has been a capable caretaker of the offense, but the 49ers could use a little more firepower.

Tight end Vernon Davis is San Francisco’s top receiving threat, but another playmaker at the receiving position would be a welcome addition.
