BCS Rankings: Auburn Tigers Lead List of Overrated Teams
The BCS rankings almost always have problems and this year is no different.
The first installment of this year's rankings have plenty of overrated teams. Here's a look at three of them.
Auburn Tigers (No. 20)
Auburn is 5-2 and there are plenty of one-loss teams below them that deserve to be higher.
Not only do they have two losses, those two losses are by a combined 38 points. The Tigers' wins, on the other hand, are by an average margin of just eight points.
The former national champions have been incredibly inconsistent this year and yet are still in a favorable position in the BCS rankings.
A matchup at LSU will likely change that, however.
West Virginia Mountaineers (No. 15)
I know most people hate the strength of schedule argument, but I'm sorry, whom exactly have the Mountaineers played?
They beat Maryland, which isn't very good, and struggled to do it. Uh, they dominated Connecticut at home? That was a nice win, I guess.
Their only tough matchup was against LSU, and they even got to play that one at home. And they got murdered, 47-21.
The Mountaineers just haven't been all that impressive. They've been terrific through the air, but I'm not so sure they can compete with top BCS teams. They shouldn't be No. 15.
Texas Longhorns (No. 24)
The Longhorns haven't done anything to merit being in the Top 25 in the BCS.
They started off the season unranked in the AP Poll. After four wins over Rice, BYU, UCLA and Iowa State (not quite the toughest of the tough) Texas somehow moved all the way up to No. 11.
In the last two weeks the Longhorns have shown they don't deserve anything close that. Oklahoma and Oklahoma State have both embarrassed them at home to the tune of 55-17 and 38-26.
They were rightly moved outside of the AP rankings, but the BCS still, for some odd reason, has the Longhorns at No. 24.
I don't get it.
