NFL Power Rankings: Are Green Bay Packers Undisputed Top Team?

Andrea HangstOct 17, 2011

Through six weeks, only one team in the NFL remains undefeated: The defending Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers. And that is why the Packers are yet again sitting atop my power rankings, their sixth No. 1 appearance in seven weeks.

It's hard to argue against their undefeated status; they've beaten both good teams and bad (their most recent win being against the now-0-5 St. Louis Rams) and have scored the most points of any team in doing so.

Surely they aren't indestructible—one look at their 24th-ranked rushing offense and 30th-ranked passing defense clearly shows they have weak spots they need to address before they're too deep into the second half of the season, when things like a good run game and a strong defense become higher priorities.

But the fact that they can cover up their flaws with an explosive passing offense, unlike any of the other pass-heavy teams with a weak defense (such as the New England Patriots), means that they've clearly bought themselves some time to shore up those weaknesses.

While it's unlikely that the Packers will go undefeated into the postseason, with teams having more and more of a chance to work on ways to slow their passing game, forcing them to run, and on ways to exploit the Packers' problematic secondary, the odds are certainly in their favor to go 7-0.

They next face the Minnesota Vikings in Week 7, followed by their Week 8 bye. Then they face their next difficult opponent, the San Diego Chargers, in Week 9, which includes a trip out west.

That contest is their next realistic chance to lose a game, but unless that happens (and in a big way), there's little reason for the Packers to drop in the power rankings any time soon.
