Jason Campbell Injury: Updates on Raiders Star's Week 7 Status and Fantasy Value

Donald WoodOct 17, 2011

The Oakland Raiders have shown that they have the talent on the defensive side of the ball and in the running game, but there was a question about whether or not Jason Campbell could put the team over the edge.

During Sunday’s victory over the Cleveland Browns, Campbell was hit hard and left the game in very obvious discomfort. The in-game diagnosis of a shoulder injury was a bit off, with the final verdict being a broken collarbone.

Rotoworld predicts that Campbell has played his last game with the Raiders following the team's trade for Carson Palmer. It wouldn't be surprising, especially with Palmer locked up for a couple more years.

The trade makes it even more likely that Campbell will be placed on injured reserve. Oakland restructured Palmer's contract to $43 million through 2014, so Campbell won't be back as a free agent in 2012. After showing at least moderate improvement this season, Campbell will enter the open market alongside Alex Smith as the top quarterbacks available in the offseason.

With Campbell and Smith projected to be the best quarterbacks available during the offseason, it's no surprise the phrase "suck for Luck" has become so popular.

It doesn't matter if Jason Campbell is able to make a miraculous recovery from his collarbone surgery because he will not return as the starting quarterback. The Raiders have moved on after acquiring veteran QB Carson Palmer from the Cincinnati Bengals for two draft picks, including a 2012 first-round selection, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Injury Update

After taking Campbell to the dressing room for x-rays, the Oakland Raiders confirmed that Campbell broke his collar bone and that surgery would happen Monday.

This is not good news for the Raiders, but depending on who they get to replace the quarterback, it could be a blessing in disguise for a long playoff push

When He’s Ready to Return

All signs are pointing to surgery Monday, and a recovery time of at least six weeks. While that is a modest estimate, the same injury has put other quarterbacks out for much longer than the initial timeline estimated.

While the prognosis may be six weeks now, Oakland can’t depend on Campbell coming back this season.

Fantasy Impact

While Jason Campbell wasn’t owned by many fantasy players across the country, there is a chance that people could look to his replacement as a spot starter if they go with a veteran from the outside.

While a David Garrard would be a good play for one week, if the Raiders somehow got Carson Palmer that would be the kind of pickup that could change your season.
