Jason Campbell Injury: Will Oakland Raiders Be Forced to Grab David Garrard?

John RozumOct 17, 2011

According to Charley Casserly of CBS Sports, the Oakland Raiders should pick up free agent QB David Garrard with Jason Campbell out:

"

"Tough loss of Jason Campbell. He was playing efficiently for the Raiders, who rely upon a running game and play-action. It will now be Kyle Boller's turn. His history has been to be inaccurate and inconsistent in his decision-making. The Raiders will try to do what they did with Campbell and run the ball to set up the play-action passing game"

"

Casserly went on to add:

"All of a sudden, Terrelle Pryor becomes the backup QB, unless the Raiders sign another QB, which I think they should. This is where David Garrard should be called and should sign."

"

So Oakland fans, should your Raiders make a motion for former Jacksonville QB David Garrard?

Yes, yes they should and here's why.

Like Casserly said, with Campbell out, it's now either Kyle Boller or Terrelle Pryor.

Would you rather have a QB like Boller, who's best NFL season was 13 TDs and 11 picks for 2,559 yards, or Garrard, who is coming off his best season in 2010 (23 TDs, 15 picks, 2,734 yards and a 90.8 rating)?

Also, Garrard has thrown for over 3,000 yards twice and despite playing only 12 games in 2007, he threw 18 TDs to only three interceptions.

As for Pryor, he has yet to prove himself but does give the Raiders a better chance than Boller in the long run.

If Oakland does not sign Garrard, Boller will most likely become the starter, but only until head coach Hue Jackson sees more from Pryor in practice.

That being said, the addition of Garrard would be a great improvement for the Silver and Black.

When in Jacksonville, Garrard played respectably well and did so without WRs that aren't nearly as explosive as Oakland's.

In addition, although RB Maurice Jones-Drew is a great NFL RB, Darren McFadden is the better back right now and he'll only help Garrard that much more.

Not to mention, Garrard is better than Boller to begin with and also provides the ability to extend plays.

Campbell being out definitely puts a damper to the offense, but acquiring Garrard will only keep them rolling as he's not only more proven and established than Boller and Pryor, but still has that fire burning inside after being released from the Jaguars in favor of a rookie QB.
