UFC TUF 14 Finale Bisping vs. Mayhem: Who Does a 5-Round Fight Benefit More?

Matthew HemphillOct 19, 2011

When Michael Bisping and Jason "Mayhem" Miller square off in the cage at The Ultimate Fighter Season 14 Finale it will not only be the main event, but the third five-round non-title fight in UFC history.

Whatever fans' feelings on the rule change might be, it certainly changes the fight.

Bisping is taller man and has won more of his fights by knockout than Miller. With a height and striking advantage going for him, Bisping is more likely to get the better of the stand-up.

Miller has fought as low as 170 pounds, where as Bisping started at 205 pounsd and has only moved down to middleweight. The chances are that Bisping is also going to be the bigger man when they step into the cage for this one.

Miller has even been manhandled by smaller fighters, albeit great ones, such as George St-Pierre.

However, Miller is the one who benefits from the extra two rounds.

Though Bisping has quite a few knockouts, most of them have come at the beginning of his career. As he has stepped up against tougher competition, he has failed to get the same results.

Miller, to his credit, has only been knocked out once in his career (to Frank Trigg via soccer stomps). The likelihood that Bisping will knock him out is very low.

On the other hand, it's a bit tougher to determine how well Bisping will do against Miller's black belt Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu skills. Bisping has faced ground fighters before, but never anyone on Miller's level.

How he will deal with the fight if it gets taken to the ground will be very revealing.

Miller also went five rounds with Jake Shields back in 2009 for the Strikeforce middleweight title. He lost the fight, but still went the five round distance, something Bisping has yet to do.

This is the single most important fact going into the fight.

Prizefighters have always been about two things: Who is the stronger man and who is the smarter fighter.

Bisping may be the stronger man, but having gone through a five round fight makes Miller the stronger fighter.

He has been into the deeper rounds and he knows what it takes to get through them, even with a loss.

When the fourth and fifth round hit, fans will see that.
