NFL Picks Week 6: Miami Dolphins vs. New York Jets, Monday Night Football Props

Jeff GrantOct 17, 2011

The New York Jets (2-3) and Miami Dolphins (0-4) close out Week 6 of the 2011 NFL season on ESPN's Monday Night Football, and plenty of storylines surround the AFC East matchup.

Las Vegas oddsmakers sent out the Jets as eight-point home favorites at MetLife Stadium, but that was immediately bet down.  The total has risen 1.5 points at most sports books and settled in at 42.5.

Due to the handicapper line that I generated earlier in the week, I'm definitely expecting New York (-6.5) to snap its three-game losing streak, with all of those defeats coming on the road.

Prime-time football events are also known for having countless proposition wagers, offering more ways for bettors to cash in.

Let's take a look at five prop bets that you should make in tonight's contest.

Shonn Greene, Rushing TD

1 of 5

It's time for the New York Jets to bring back Rex Ryan's "Ground-and-Pound" philosophy, as they've gotten away from it in dropping three consecutive games.

New York is a dominating 21-7 during the Ryan era when having more runs and completions than its opponent, which certainly hasn't happened the last two weeks, losing that statistic by a double-digit margin against Baltimore and New England.

Running back Shonn Greene is coming off his best game of the season, carrying the ball 21 times for 83 yards, while also scoring a touchdown in last week's 30-21 loss to the Patriots as 7.5-point road underdogs.

With LaDainian Tomlinson already limited with a calf injury and likely coming in only in passing situations, I like Greene to hit pay dirt in this prime-time event.

Pick: Shonn Greene to score a touchdown (+115)

Santonio Holmes, Receptions

2 of 5

If you simply look at the statistics through five games, casual bettors will jump on the under in this offering, as New York Jets receiver Santonio Holmes has 17 catches for 224 yards.

That certainly doesn't average out to over four catches.

Holmes has made some news by calling out the offensive line, which Ryan doesn't mind due to Holmes being a Super Bowl champion.

I expect him to lead by example and rise to the occasion.

Pick: Santonio Holmes over four receptions (+105)

Mark Sanchez, TD Passes

3 of 5

Just because I like Holmes to go over four receptions doesn't automatically have me playing props that Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez will have a tremendous game.

Miami has been a nightmare opponent for the third-year starter, completing 48.9 percent of his passes for 909 yards in four career games in this series.

We're already riding Greene to score a touchdown, so this is my way of telling New York to keep the ball on the ground in scoring situations.

Pick: Mark Sanchez under 1.5 touchdown passes (-110)

Matt Moore, Passing Yards

4 of 5

I anticipate that the New York Jets will try to control the clock offensively while also getting after Miami Dolphins quarterback Matt Moore.

This will be Moore's first opportunity to face Ryan's defense, which doesn't bode well for the former Oregon State star.

Opposing signal-callers have managed to complete just 51.9 percent of their passes over the last two-plus seasons against his defense, which isn't far off from Moore's 55.9 completion percentage when playing on the road.

That's an impressive defensive statistic when considering that he faces New England quarterback Tom Brady two times a year.

Pick:  Matt Moore under 195.5 passing yards

Miami Dolphins Quarterbacks, TD or INT

5 of 5

The Miami Dolphins passing attack completed just 5-of-19 passes last year for 55 yards when capturing a 10-6 road win over the New York Jets.

Chad Henne was the quarterback in that contest, and now Moore will step into a hostile environment against an opponent looking to snap a three-game losing streak while also aiming to even up its record.

Not exactly a formula for success.

Pick: Miami quarterbacks to throw interception before touchdown (-145)
