Sean Payton Injury Update: Saints Coach Wisely Rushing to Get Surgery and Return

Alex KayOct 17, 2011

Sean Payton isn’t wasting a minute of time and will undergo surgery and return to the New Orleans Saints’ offices on Tuesday morning.

Last night he told Mike Triplett of The Times-Picayune that he would have surgery this morning, which is great news for Saints fans.

After their loss yesterday to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Saints are deadlocked for the division lead and behind in the tiebreaker. They cannot afford to skip a beat if they hope to win the extremely tough NFC South.

They have a huge advantage this week and a good chance to move back ahead as the Bucs must travel to London to play the Chicago Bears in Wembley Stadium. The Saints get to rest and recover in New Orleans and await the arrival of the 0-6 Indianapolis Colts.

While Payton is hoping that everything is normal by Tuesday with regard to their regular practice routine, we may not be seeing him back on the sideline for some time.

When asked if he will be on the field himself during practice, Payton said,

"

"We'll see. I'm hopeful that's the case. And I might have to be up in the press box for a few games. Because it's a fracture it's different. If it's the MCL you can have the brace, but the fracture on the outside means the weight bearing part of it really changes. But the plan is to be back at Saints camp on Tuesday and keep things going as we normally would."

"

The Saints must hope that this won’t affect their play on the field. Payton didn’t seem to have a major problem with how they played in his absence, saying,

"

"I think this after the game, I thought we played with energy and effort, and yet the turnovers become almost insurmountable. But that being said, there's a chance still at the end to pull it out, and we weren't able to. So credit Tampa Bay, and we get back to work this week."

"

There is nothing he can do on the sidelines to prevent turnovers, so the Saints are hoping they continue to play good football with their coach in the box.
