Jim Harbaugh Fight Video: Did Harbaugh's Colorful Language Trigger Fight?

Alex KayOct 17, 2011

San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh isn’t completely to blame for the near-physical fight that took place between he and Detroit Lions coach Jim Schwartz yesterday, but he definitely provoked it.

The situation stemmed from a series of ridiculous, over-the-top celebrations from both sides during the game. The coaches were treating the matchup as if it were the Super Bowl from the opening kick off.

Both teams have been terrible over the past decade, but they are both playoff bound this season and the coaches are understandably pumped up about it.

When Schwartz was asked why he chased Harbaugh down the field to get a piece of him after the postgame interview, he chose to keep it short.

“I went to congratulate Coach Harbaugh…and I didn’t expect an obscenity at that point,” he explained in terse sentences. “I’m sure it’s on video.”

The obscenity can’t be the reason why Schwartz was so upset, though.

Just look at Schwartz celebrate after a big win for the Lions last week. The man is one of the most animated coaches in the game right now.

I think Schwartz was upset that Harbaugh pulled his own routine on him and then gave a ridiculously hard hand-shake/back slap that was completely inappropriate towards his losing counterpart.

The two teams fought long and hard all day and it was full of excessive celebrations and arguing between the teams and the officials.

It makes sense that Schwartz lost his temper after pretty much being hit by Harbaugh in one of the more rude postgame handshakes we have ever seen.

I’m sure we will never find out the exact reason for the fight, because both coaches would rather let it go and not face a fine at this point.

But blaming it on the language of the other coach? Well, that just seems ridiculous.
