Jim Harbaugh and Jim Schwartz Confrontation: Let's Move On

Collin KottkeOct 16, 2011

Who cares!

By now we've all seen the video of San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh and Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz. It’s one of those things that are blown way out of proportion by the media.

The San Fransisco 49ers and Detroit Lions played a tough, competitive game. Emotions were high, and those emotions lasted past the final whistle. Not only do players let their emotions get the best of them, but so do coaches.

Jim Harbaugh ran across the field to shake Jim Schwartz’s hand; with that big of game, he could have chosen not to. Harbaugh ran and gave Schwartz a very energetic handshake along with a slap on the back, which Schwartz took exception to.

Now, the slap on the back was probably unprofessional, but it’s not that big of a deal. Schwartz made it a big deal by running after Harbaugh, which is definitely unprofessional.

So both men were at fault, but more of the blame lies with Detroit coach Jim Schwartz. He is the one who escalated the situation, which should never happen after an NFL game. Schwartz's actions could have caused a brawl—it didn't, and nobody got hurt, so let’s move on.

Emotions run high during any competition, anywhere from pee-wee flag football to high school to college to the pros. There is a passion in everyone involved in the game.

Was the handshake that Harbaugh gave Schwartz appropriate? No. Was Schwartz’s reaction appropriate? Definitely not. But this shouldn't be a story. I shouldn't be writing about this.

We know this is wrong, and I didn't think anything of it, but during the Vikings vs. Bears game, this was all they would talk about. The Vikings were getting blown out, but there were better things to talk about than this.

Confrontations will always happen. If this wasn't Jim Harbaugh and Jim Schwartz but just two players, would we even be talking about this? We wouldn't be.

The media is making a big deal about this because it’s two coaches—so what. Both coaches are young and very passionate about football. They were both in the wrong. Let’s move on.

It wasn't an acceptable act, but you have to applaud the passion. It shouldn't have happened, especially Schwartz’s reaction, but it’s nice to see some cold-cut passion from NFL head coaches.
