Kyle Orton Trade Rumors: 5 Teams He Could Fix Immediately

Hunter AnsleyOct 16, 2011

With rumors about more than one skill player being placed on the trading block in Denver, it's really no surprise that Kyle Orton has joined the fray. According to a report by the Associated Press (h/t to Rotoworld), Orton has asked to be traded prior to Tuesday's deadline. This comes after coach John Fox's recent decision to start second-year quarterback Tim Tebow instead.

Still, being cast aside for Tebow isn't the career killer many would have you believe. Orton still has value in this league, and he's proven that, with the right coach and system, he can be an effective solution, if only for the short term. With Tuesday coming just around the corner, here are five teams that could use Orton's services as soon as possible.

5. Miami Dolphins

1 of 5

Why not start with the team that started it all? The Dolphins were the No. 1 projected landing spot for Orton this offseason before the deal fell through. Miami turned its back on Denver and decided to roll the dice with Chad Henne, which worked about as well as a square wheel until he was recently shelved for the season with a separated shoulder.

Now, this is Matt Moore's team, sort of, and that's no way to run an offense. Orton has worked with Brandon Marshall before, and the two had excellent success together at times in 2009. He obviously wouldn't be the long-term solution, but he could hold down the fort until whoever Miami drafts in 2012 is ready to go.

4. Oakland Raiders

2 of 5

Jason Campbell is likely to miss the remainder of the 2011 season after breaking his collarbone, and that leaves only Kyle Boller and rookie Terrelle Pryor as options under center.

The Raiders, at 4-2, are still in prime position to win the AFC West, but even with Darren McFadden in the backfield, they'll need a competent quarterback to accomplish that goal. Campbell was successful this season due in large part to his ability to protect the football, not one of Orton's strengths, but it'd be poetic justice for the Neckbeard to lead Oakland to a division title while romping over the Broncos and their booing fans.

3. Seattle Seahawks

3 of 5

The Seahawks have been better of late, earning a surprising upset of the New York Giants in Week 5, but they still can't be content with their current quarterback situation. Tarvaris Jackson has improved, throwing four touchdowns against three picks and earning a 300-yard passing game over the past three Sundays, but he's not exactly the guy you want leading your team into the playoffs.

Seattle still has a chance to win the AFC West, and if they could land a passer like Orton, who has some comfort in similar offensive systems, they could open up enough of an aerial attack to provide some room for the ground game. Again, he's no long-term answer, and the Seahawks are still in need of a franchise QB, but he could take this offense to another level.

2. Washington Redskins

Anyone else see Rex Grossman's four-interception performance in the Redskins' 20-13 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles? Unfortunately, even if you didn't see it live, you probably saw it coming. The answer offered by Washington? John Beck. That's not going to cut it.

The Redskins are still very much alive in the NFC East, but they won't realize any of their goals without an offense led by a consistent producer under center. Orton's penchant for turnovers will hurt him no matter where he ends up, and he doesn't fit the mold of a Mike Shanahan passer, but he's certainly an upgrade over the current options.

With Washington's strong running game and stingy defense, Orton wouldn't be asked to carry the load. He'd simply have to provide some semblance of balance for an offense that has a main goal of just not screwing it up for the defense.

1. Denver Broncos

5 of 5

I'm serious. Yeah, there's pretty much no way Orton stays put if the trade-request rumors are true, but if Denver can't find a willing partner, there's still a role for Orton on this team.

He's not going to start again. Coaches don't often go back to the passer they replaced due to poor play. But he could keep his mouth shut and help the team by being a non-dissenting teammate. He'd provide a solid backup in case of injury to Tim Tebow, which is not an impossibility given his playing style, and he'd enter next offseason with a shot at earning a contract in 2012.

If he heads elsewhere and fails, he'll lose the luxury of the "horrible Tim Tebow situation" excuse.
