Mitch Picks The SEC Championship: Florida Vs. Alabama

Mitch WilsonDec 5, 2008

It's my favorite day of the week during my favorite time of the year once again, Saturday during college football season.

We have had an absolute blast this year picking over 400 games and meeting college football fans all over the world, from Germany to Bosnia, to all over the United States, to Greece, you can pretty much throw a dart at the globe and we've had visitors from there this year, pretty amazing stuff.

I have picked every game this week and Jordan has posted his picks as well except there is one game I left out of both the blog and newsletter and and I am going to dedicate my entire article today to the teams of the two fan bases who have felt I have had it in for them: Alabama and Florida.

The funny thing is I have heard plenty from both fan bases asking for my take on this one and both fan bases are fully prepared and expect me to pick against their two, unfortunately for all of us, the way this works is I have to pick someone, it wouldn't be a lot of fun nor a lot of help if I didn't pick anyone.

Alabama Vs. Florida: The SEC Championship

Saturday 12/6/08  4 EST  The Line: Florida -10

Overview:

We have not only two of the best teams in the SEC going at it head to head this week, we have two of the best teams in the country. Alabama is a team that has exceeded all expectations. While many felt the Crimson Tide would be a much improved team, very few thought we would be looking at an undefeated and No. 1 ranked team in the country.

Alabama has done it with stingy defense and controlling the ball on the ground. It has given their quarterback, John Parker Wilson, the freedom that he doesn't have to win the game by himself, he has to just be able to manage it well enough not to lose it. In this capacity JPW has proved to be more than competent.

Florida has done it with a vastly improved defense and running game and quite simple with team speed that hasn't been seen in Gainesville ever before. While the Gators did stumble at home this season to Ole Miss, they have made good on their QB and last year's Heisman winner Tim Tebow's promise to be a better a team for it by blowing out everyone in their path. This sets up to be a most interesting match up.
