Peyton Hillis Trade Speculation: 5 Teams That Could Acquire the Browns RB

Jeff KneisOct 16, 2011

Over the Browns' bye week in Week 5, Peyton Hillis' contract extension talks with the team did not appear to progress well. Sunday's 24-17 loss to the Raiders didn't exactly go well either, as Hillis played but was removed from the game for a while due to a hamstring injury and finished with 14 total yards.

Browns pundits at Cleveland.com said earlier that the next step Hillis might make is asking for a trade before the Tuesday deadline.

Since the Browns wouldn't have much time, he could be available at a discounted price for another team. It will be interesting to see if the Browns would take his trade demand seriously or if they are confident they can get him to re-sign.

While many teams are set with their starting running back, there a few squads that might be interested if he became available.

Here are five teams that could consider acquiring the Browns' star running back.

1. New England Patriots

While the Patriots already have a solid backfield duo in Danny Woodhead and BenJarvus Green-Ellis, those two have both been hanged up this year, and Hillis could be a great weapon for the Patriots for the rest of the season. He could be used in situations that call for power running, a weapon the Patriots could use against good defenses.

If the price is right, I think the Patriots would be willing to part with one of their various mid-round draft picks in 2012 to pick up another weapon for their offense.

The 1,000-yard rusher from last season would be a great fit for the Patriots.

2. New York Giants

2 of 5

The Giants could be a team that is looking to upgrade its RB group. While Ahmad Bradshaw and Brandon Jacobs make up one of the better running back tandems, Jacobs is 29 years old and only has a few years left.

New York's offense is always at it's best when they have the quick, shifty back and the big bruising power back. Hillis could fit well into the power back role as Jacobs gets older.

Since the Giants are pretty well set at RB for the year, they would most likely only make the move if they felt they were getting a good deal.

3. San Francisco 49ers

3 of 5

Peyton Hillis potentially could be a huge addition to the Jim Harbaugh-led 49ers. With the Niners focusing more on the power running game, he could be a great fit like Toby Gerhart was for the Harbaugh-led Stanford team.

With Frank Gore getting older and unproven backups, Hillis could be the power runner the 49ers covet. For the right price the Niners could get an impact RB that could lead the office for many years to come.

4. Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs are the team that would most likely be interested in trading for Peyton Hillis. After Jamaal Charles suffered a season-ending injury, the Chiefs have been looking for a replacement at the position.

Kansas City could potentially find an answer for the season at RB that could come at a cheap price. The Chiefs could then make the choice to re-sign Hillis or stick with Charles once he recovers from injury.

Hillis would be a definite upgrade at the position and would give the Chiefs a more balanced offense for 2011.

5. Indianpolis Colts

5 of 5

The Colts are another team that could use an upgrade at the RB position. Joseph Addai is winding down his career, while Delone Carter is still untested. The Colts could get younger and have a great RB to help relieve the pressure from Painter.

The only question would be, is whether the Colts would be willing to give up a precious draft pick when they have other issues they need to solve.
