Jason Campbell: Raiders Will Sign David Garrard Before They Start Terrelle Pryor

Brian MaziqueOct 16, 2011

Many of Al Davis' detractors would expect the Raiders to find a way to get Terrelle Pryor on the field this year, especially now with Jason Campbell seemingly lost for an extended period.

Kyle Boller has never been a quality QB and he struggled mightily when he was inserted into the game after Campbell went down. The Raiders are only carrying three QBs and that would leave the young and embattled rookie QB from Ohio St. as an option.

That would be season and possibly career suicide for the Raiders and Pryor. It's simple: Pryor is not ready to start at QB in the NFL. In a best case scenario, I don't think the Raiders would have him take the field before 2013 as a starter.

The worse thing that can happen for both parties at this point would be to overreact and force Pryor into action way before he is ready. The Raiders are 4-2 and a legitimate threat to win the AFC West. They need stability and Pryor playing at this stage of his career does not deliver that.

Fortunately for the Raiders, their identity begins and ends with the running game. So, the QB they need is really just a game manager. The ability to strike for the occasional big play through play-action would be ideal.

The closest thing to that, that is available is of course David Garrard. Garrard is accustomed to being the signal caller for run-first offenses and is renowned for his ability to avoid mistakes. He also has the ability to make plays with his feet.

ESPN analyst Adam Schefter tweeted this is regards to the Raiders acquiring Garrard, “I’d already have arranged for him to be in Oakland on Monday.”
