Biggest Bonehead Plays from NFL Week 6

Gary DavenportOct 16, 2011

As is always the case in the National Football League, Week 6 featured plenty of thrilling action, with quarterbacks throwing precision passes, running backs lowering their heads for hard-fought yards, and wide receivers making acrobatic catches.

Unfortunately, it's also usually the case on any given Sunday that at least a few plays will leave you scratching your heads and wondering how such talented athletes can make such glaring mistakes, and it's those bodacious boo-boos we'll focus on here with the biggest bonehead plays to this point in Week 6.

1. Rex Grossman's Rough Day

1 of 5

It's nearly impossible to single out one play that truly defines just how badly Washington Redskins quarterback Rex Grossman played today, as to do so would be a grave disservice to just how putrid a performance Grossman put forth in Washington's loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

The nine-year veteran was a horrid 9-of-22 for 143 yards with no touchdowns and four interceptions before being pulled from the game in favor of John Beck, and you know it's been a rough day at the office when you get a game ball...from the other team.

2. Cam Newton Makes a BIG Mistake

2 of 5

Rookie quarterback Cam Newton of the Carolina Panthers has been scintillating to this point in his brief professional career, but he had his worst game of the season in today's loss to the Atlanta Falcons, failing to throw a touchdown pass for the first time this year and tossing three interceptions.

The low point of Newton's day came in the fourth quarter, when an errant Newton pass was intercepted...by defensive tackle Corey Peters.

Um, Cam, it's kind of hard to miss seeing a 6'3", 305-pound man standing there, so what gives?

3. Pierre Garcon Fumble Proves Costly

3 of 5

It's been a honeymoon of sorts between Indianapolis Colts quarterback Curtis Painter and wide receiver Pierre Garcon, as the two had hooked up for four touchdown passes over the past two weeks entering today's tilt in Cincinnati against the Bengals.

However, the honeymoon may be over now, as while Garcon had eight receptions today, his fourth-quarter fumble was scooped up by Bengals defensive end Carlos Dunlap and returned 35 yards for a touchdown, crushing any chances the Colts may have had of earning their first win of the season.

4. Jim Schwartz Doesn't Like Happy People

4 of 5

In one of the better games of the day, the San Francisco 49ers knocked the Detroit Lions from the ranks of the unbeaten in a 25-19 affair that featured plenty of action and excitement.

The real fun didn't start until after the game, however, as Detroit head coach Jim Schwartz, apparently irked by San Francisco head coach Jim Harbaugh's enthusiasm after the 49ers' big win, went after Harbaugh after the two coaches shook hands following the game.

Schwartz and Harbaugh had to be separated, and it's pretty safe to assume they won't be exchanging Christmas cards this year.

Stay classy, Jimbo.

5. The Saints Let Benn Go Marching in

5 of 5

As I write this, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are somewhat surprisingly giving the New Orleans Saints all they can handle, leading 23-13 in Tampa as we near the end of the third quarter.

It didn't help that the New Orleans secondary apparently forgot Buccaneers wideout Arrelious Benn was in fact an eligible receiver, as the Saints let Benn glide right past them before quarterback Josh Freeman found him for a 65-yard touchdown bomb.

You have to love it any time you see the perfect implementation of the Matador defense.
