BCS Rankings: How USA Today No. 1 Oklahoma Throws Everything off

Alex CallosOct 16, 2011

For a team like LSU, being No. 1 in the latest AP Poll means absolutely nothing.

With the BCS rankings set to come out in a few hours, Oklahoma holds the advantage by being ranked No. 1 in the USA Today Coaches Poll, one spot ahead of LSU.

The AP Poll used to be considered equal to the USA Today Poll, but when it comes down to it, the AP Poll means nothing and the Oklahoma Sooners are messing everything up by being ranked No. 1.

The BCS rankings are comprised of equal parts USA Today Poll, Harris poll and computer polls. Six different computer rankings make up the computer polls.

These rankings are unfair to LSU who certainly can make a case to be No. 1 over Oklahoma.

LSU has clearly been more impressive than anybody in the country with the schedule they have played and the way they have dominated opponents.

The Tigers are being penalized because Oklahoma began the year ranked No. 1 in the Coaches Poll and that is simply throwing everything off.

There is no reason for there to be two different polls if only one counts toward the BCS rankings. The polls are looked at as equal for most of the season. That is until the BCS rankings come out. Then everybody virtually forgets about the AP Poll, as they should.

It simply serves no purpose, except to mess up a system that has many other flaws, which we will not get into.

If there are going to continue to be two rankings that are supposed to be perceived as equal, then the AP Poll should be counted in the BCS rankings. Otherwise, it will just create more and more controversy for teams like LSU and Oklahoma.
