2012 NFL Mock Draft: Alshon Jeffery and 4 Players Who Could Jump Andrew Luck

Alex KayOct 16, 2011

It’s going to take a miracle for Andrew Luck not to go No. 1 overall.

St. Louis, Jacksonville, Carolina and Minnesota have no need for a franchise QB right now, and with possibly Arizona and Denver joining that list, it might just not be that crazy to see Luck fall past No. 1.

Those teams listed above all have a potential franchise QB already on the roster and have much more pressing needs at other positions.

While the most likely scenario for one of those teams who doesn't feel Luck is a fit involves a trade to a squad like Miami, who desperately needs a QB, it wouldn’t be insane for them to draft another highly valued prospect at that spot.

Let’s take a look at four guys not named Andrew Luck who have the ability and potential to go No. 1 overall in the 2012 NFL Draft.

Alshon Jeffery

1 of 4

Jeffery may not even be the best receiver playing in college right now. That honor goes to another receiver on this list, Justin Blackmon.

But Jeffery stands at 6’4”, 233-pounds and is simply a better pro prospect and has the ability to be a No. 1 receiver almost immediately at the next level.

The South Carolina receiver is also clutch, scoring a game-winning TD on a jump ball in the end zone against SEC rival Mississippi State this Saturday.

He could easily be one of the best receivers in the NFL someday soon, and it wouldn’t be that far-fetched to see him drafted at No. 1 overall.

Matt Kalil

2 of 4

Kalil is the best left tackle in this draft, with LT generally considered one of the safest positions to draft early.

He has been starring at USC and has a football lineage, with his father Frank playing pro ball in the 1980’s and brother Ryan currently a two-time Pro Bowler for the Carolina Panthers.

If a team that already has a franchise quarterback feels the need to better protect their investment, Kalil is the guy to do exactly that.

Justin Blackmon

3 of 4

Blackmon might not be a physical freak, but you simply cannot deny his production.

He stands at a solid 6’1”, 215-pounds, and he has been able to put up incredible statistics in his college career.

In 2010 he had 111 receptions for 1,782 yards and 20 TDs.

So far in 2011, he has put grabbed 53 catches for 608 yards and seven TDs despite facing myriads of coverage designed to stop him.

The Oklahoma State product is going to be a stud in the NFL, and no one would blame a team for thinking him worthy of the top pick.

Quinton Coples

4 of 4

While Coples is having a down year, teams place huge value on elite pass-rushing ends.

His potential and size alone make him worthy of a top selection, and if he improves despite facing constant double and triple teams this season, we could see him potentially go No. 1 overall.

Getting a guy who could be an All-Pro pass rusher at the next level is something teams salivate thinking about, and they have gone No. 1 in the past—just look at Mario Williams in 2006.

Coples has similar size to Williams (6’6”, 275 for Coples, 6’6”, 295 for Williams) and athleticism.

It would not surprise me to see Coples blow up over these next few weeks and make a real push for No. 1 or at least No. 2 overall.
