Why the St. Louis Rams Are the Worst Team in the NFL

Hal NicholsOct 16, 2011

This was supposed to the year the St. Louis Rams turned the corner and started to show signs of life following years of being one of the worst franchises in the NFL. Sam Bradford has shown flashes of being a potential star in the NFL.

However, this season has been a horror show—especially for the Rams' offense, which has been the worst in the league at scoring points.

Injuries are certainly part of their problems, as the Rams have sorely missed running back Steven Jackson and Danny Amendola, who was lost for the season with a gruesome elbow injury.

Jackson got off to a phenomenal start this year before almost immediately getting hurt. While he has been able to make the lineup in recent weeks, he has clearly not been up to his normal standards. If anything is going to turn the Rams' season around, it will be Jackson getting healthy and back on track again.

But the bigger worry for Rams fans is that Bradford has seriously regressed from his rookie season.  His completion percentage in particular is down 11 percent to below 50 percent. Sophomore slumps are one thing, but there is more at work here, which should serve as serious cause for concern.

Bradford has taken a sack on more than 10 percent of his drop-backs to pass. This astronomical figure goes a long way toward explaining the Rams' woes on offense.

The worst thing a team can do to derail the career of a young QB before it even gets started is get him beat to a pulp. Quarterbacks can develop a whole host of bad habits when they never feel comfortable in the pocket, and Bradford has to be getting to the point where he expects to get hit on practically every play.

Right now the Rams are making a strong case to beat out the Miami Dolphins as the worst team in the NFL. Unlike Miami though, St. Louis at least has the promise of an All-Pro RB getting healthy and coming back into the lineup for the rest of the season.

However, as it stand right now, the Rams can't score and can't play much defense, and that currently makes them the worst team in the NFL.
