Chris Cooley Injury: Update on Redskins Star's Finger Injury

Andrew KulhaOct 16, 2011

Update via RotoWorld 4:30 p.m. EST:

"

Chris Cooley needs surgery on his left index finger.

"
"
Cooley fractured the finger on a Nnamdi Asomugha hit in the first quarter Sunday and didn't return. It sounds like his finger has "shattered," rather than suffering a "clean break." There's no timetable yet, but Cooley figures to struggle as a pass-catcher even if he makes it back this season. Fred Davis will pick up a couple extra targets per game going forward.

Things weren't looking too good for the Washington Redskins, going down 20-3 at home against the division rival Philadelphia Eagles.

Losing star tight end Chris Cooley isn't going to help their cause either, in this game or the future.

Cooley has been dealing with injuries for the majority of the season, so thankfully for the Redskins they were able to utilize tight end Fred Davis, who has been productive in Cooley's absence.

This game against the Eagles may be a wash, but I think the Redskins can recover.

Fantasy Impact:

Obviously, this is a big loss if you have Cooley, but if you happen to have his backup, Davis, on your bench, you might be getting lucky.

Who's The Backup:

Fred Davis is going to be the guy until Cooley heals up. He played great in stints earlier this season, so there shouldn't be too much drop-off.

Devastation Scale: 5

Losing a player the caliber of Cooley is going to hurt, but I really like Davis as a backup, so there shouldn't be a huge drop-off in talent.

Timeline for Return:

At this point Cooley's timeline for return is unclear, but there is no denying the importance of having all of your fingers in use as a receiver. Fingers usually are just splinted up, but the severity of this injury is still in question. I wouldn't expect to see him for the rest of this game, though.
