Panthers vs. Falcons: 4 Halftime Adjustments Carolina Needs to Make

The Carolina Panthers have gotten great production from their offense so far this year, with Cam Newton leading the way, but defensive letdowns have them sitting at 1-4 right now.

Heading into a winnable game against a so-far-disappointing Atlanta Falcons team, the Panthers needed to get their usual production out of Newton, Steve Smith and Co., but they also needed to be able to stop Matt Ryan and Michael Turner.

So far, they are still in a position to win this game, trailing just 14-10. Here's what they need to do to come away with a W.

Avoid Stupid Penalties

On their first play from scrimmage, the Panthers got called for holding on a draw play and subsequently had to start their first drive from further back. Luckily, they were bailed out with a pass interference call on Atlanta, but Carolina can't afford to go backwards in this game. They need to make every play count.

The Panthers also have had at least three other bad penalties declined because they gave up a big play anyway, then gave up a huge pass interference in the end zone that led to an easy Falcons touchdown. And then again a second PI against Roddy White that led to another TD.

Ride the Horse That Brought You

On their first six touches combined, including receptions, Williams and Stewart only managed 10 yards. The Falcons are obviously looking to not let the running game beat them, so play along and torch them through the air until they find a way to stop you there. Cam seems like he's on his game so far, let's see how much he can do.

Make the First Tackle

I'm not keeping track of the official number, but Atlanta has to have a bunch of yards after contact so far this game. Carolina needs to wrap up Michael Turner and bring him down the first time they hit him. Those extra yards are killing them so far.

Get Stops on Third Down

The Panthers were able to get the Falcons in some good third down situations, but were unable to get stops. So far the Falcons are 4-of-5 in third-down situations. The Panthers need to stop them when it matters.
