Hopkins vs. Dawson Results: Chad Dawson Wins Title by Questionable TKO
Bernard Hopkins, who is amazingly still boxing professionally at 46 years old, lost his WBC light heavyweight title with 12 seconds left in the second round due to a TKO by Chad Dawson.
As the second round was coming to a close, Hopkins lunged at Dawson, and as Dawson ducked, the Executioner found himself over Dawson's back. In the tangle, Dawson put his shoulder into Hopkins and threw him into the ground in what appeared to be a tackle-like fashion.
The referee called time, and after laying on the ground for about a minute, Hopkins made his way to the corner where the doctors tended to him.
And just like that it was over.
It was decided that Hopkins had a separated shoulder and couldn't go on. Because no foul was assessed to the "takedown," the referee awarded Dawson with a TKO.
After the questionable finish a month ago between Mayweather and Ortiz, this marks the second title bout that has gone much less than perfectly.
This can't be good for boxing.
Richard Shaefer, the CEO of Golden Boy Promotions sums it up best:
""We are not going to accept that. Chad Dawson is not the champion, and that’s all I’m going to say about that for now. I was not happy about the refereeing tonight."
"
If this was an MMA fight, the TKO decision would have made sense. But this is boxing, and the fact of the matter is this: Dawson didn't put Hopkins to the ground via a punch.
He put him to the ground with a shoulder, and that's not a legal call.
It was a very questionable call by the referee, but one thing is sure: Whether or not you liked how it happened, Chad Dawson is the new WBC light heavyweight Champion.
