NFL Predictions Week 6: Wes Welker and 3 WRs Due for Multiple TD Days

Andrea HangstOct 16, 2011

There are three names that are the most consistently heard when their respective teams score touchdowns, and this week won't be any different. The New England Patriots' Wes Welker, the Dallas Cowboys' Dez Bryant and the Detroit Lions' Calvin Johnson will yet again have multiple touchdowns when the day is done.

Welker already has two two-touchdown games this season, despite the sheer number of reliable targets for quarterback Tom Brady. He's had only one game with fewer than 100 receiving yards, but his other games have produced such major yardage that he's averaging 148 yards per game.

While he may not get that many yards today, with both tight ends Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez active, he's got more than a great chance for over 100 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns against the Dallas Cowboys this afternoon.

Another receiver who will benefit from this shootout is the Cowboys' Bryant. Bryant has one game with two touchdowns—the Week 4 loss to the Detroit Lions—and with the team likely trying to exploit the Patriots' weak secondary to remain in the game against the one of the league's highest-scoring offenses, Bryant will be a major target for quarterback Tony Romo.

Fellow Cowboys receiver Miles Austin returns this week after missing two games with a hamstring injury, which will marginally eat into Bryant's targets. But with the team needing to pass to win, and with Bryant always capable of making big plays, regardless of his yardage total, he could easily pull down a number of scores.

Big yards, big plays and multiple touchdowns are just par for the course for the Lions' Calvin Johnson, and that will be the order of the day this afternoon, as his team hosts the San Francisco 49ers.

Johnson is averaging 90.2 yards per game, and has had just one game, last week's win over the Chicago Bears, with one touchdown. In his other four, he's had two apiece.

There's no reason to believe that Johnson cannot pull down two, even three, touchdowns this week against the 49ers. He's shown that regardless of who covers him, or how many defenders are assigned to him, he can come down with practically any pass that quarterback Mathew Stafford throws his way.

San Francisco's best corner, Carlos Rogers, will be assigned to Nate Burleson this week, with Tarell Brown and Shawntae Spencer assigned to Johnson. Regardless of who the Niners throw at him, there seems to be little way to stop Johnson; another multi-touchdown day seems nearly guaranteed.
