BCS Rankings 2011: Why Oklahoma State and Clemson Are Darkhorse Title Contenders
Every college football season has darkhorse BCS title contenders and in 2011 No. 6 Oklahoma State and No. 8 Clemson are those teams.
The Cowboys are 6-0 and have two wins against currently ranked teams, Texas and Texas A&M. Clemson is also 6-0 with notable wins against Florida State, Auburn and Virginia Tech.
These teams are led by high-powered offenses that are capable of erasing big deficits. Not only have these teams faced quality competition and are still unbeaten, they are dominating these quality teams.
Clemson averaged 35 points per game, while the Cowboys lead the nation with an average of 51.4 points scored per game.
Both of these teams are set up nicely to compete for a BCS title berth. Oklahoma State's biggest game, like every season, is their season finale against hated in-state rival Oklahoma.
If the Cowboys were able to win that game and go to the Big 12 championship game undefeated, they would deserve a BCS title game bid with a conference title.
Not only would an undefeated season give the Cowboys a win over the Sooners, they also have to get through ranked Big 12 teams such as Kansas State and Baylor.
One of the strengths for the Cowboys is their veteran leadership, which starts with quarterback Brandon Weeded, who is a 28-year-old senior. Yes, you read that right.
Clemson is also set up nicely for BCS title game consideration if they go through ACC play undefeated.
Although the ACC is weaker this season than it has been in years past, an undefeated Clemson season would mean the Tigers would have beaten five ranked teams, including a rivalry game against quality SEC opponent South Carolina.
Oklahoma State and Clemson are two explosive teams that have a great chance to win their respective conference championships and earn a BCS title game bid.
These are two offensively dominant teams who can put up points on anyone and cannot be taken lightly.
They might not have the national appeal and fanfare, but the Oklahoma State Cowboys and Clemson Tigers are two elite teams who deserve national championship consideration.
