College Football 2011: Top Contenders from Week 7

Dan VastaOct 15, 2011

Several top ranked teams opened a huge can on a bunch of middle of the pack competition in Week 7. All of the top teams in the nation won convincingly, proving why they are the best in America.

LSU, Alabama, Boise State, Wisconsin and Stanford all romped their opponents and are expected to fall in the Top 6 alongside Oklahoma in Sunday's BCS Standings. Oklahoma State won a key road game at Texas and though they did not win by a seven touchdowns like the others, road wins are hard to come by these days against ranked teams.

So, which team was the most impressive in Week 7?

No. 1 LSU Tigers

1 of 5

LSU 38, Tennessee 7

Maybe I have spent too many hours watching college football this season, but the top teams seem to be far more dominating this season compared to previous seasons.

Seriously, the Top 6 is expected to get tested every week and yet they just demolish their opponents.

LSU thrashed Tennessee with their backup quarterback, as Matt Simms completed only six passes for the game.

The Bayou Bengals ran the rock 52 times for 260 yards with three rushing touchdowns. They controlled the line of scrimmage and let it be known that LSU has a Top 5 offensive line.

Defensively, the secondary is scary good with Eric Reid, Tharold Simon, Mo Clairborne and Tyrann "The Honey Badger" Mathieu. They all are ball hawking defensive backs that play with a chip on their shoulders.

Those so called "experts" already have Alabama listed as seven point favorites, but I am not sure that I like them that much better than LSU. I think home field is a big edge, but I guess time will tell who really is the best team in the nation.

LSU's 31-point road victory in my eyes was the most impressive victory of the weekend—or was it?

No. 2 Alabama Crimson Tide

2 of 5

Alabama 52, Ole Miss 7

After trailing 7-0, some worried if Alabama was going to win this by a huge margin. Well, does 52 unanswered points stop the worrying?

Trent Richardson makes the Rebels defense look bad running like one wrecking crew as he totaled 213 yards with four rushing touchdowns. Hello Heisman?

Jalston Fowler as the backup did just okay, rushing for 125 yards and two rushing touchdowns. Eddie Lacy was resting with an injured foot and he did not see much time despite getting a few carries.

No issues for the Tide as they ran for 389 yards and six touchdowns. Can they be stopped?

People used to tell me that college football has a ton of parody, but not this season. There are five or six very good teams while it looks as if there a few great teams. We do not know how great Boise State, Wisconsin or Stanford are despite what the numbers say.

The SEC winner against the Big 12 winner could be your national title picture, but the games are still going to be played.

Ole Miss had a terrific runner in Jeff Scott and he was held to a total of 14 yards. This Crimson Tide defense is ferocious and intimidating. This may be the best front seven I have seen in the BCS era through the first two months of a season and I just wonder if any team can run on them for the entire season?

The game of the decade between Alabama and LSU on November 5th is slowly starting to pick up some steam. This is a highly anticipated game to say the least with two NFL style defenses going against loaded backfields that run for nearly half a thousand yards rushing per game.

No. 4 Wisconsin Badgers

3 of 5

Wisconsin 59, Indiana 7

If you don't count a sack that the Badgers had, they allowed 146 yards rushing in the first half to the Hooisers.

Yet, they trailed 38-7 and were never even close to keeping this game respectable. The Badgers did whatever they wanted to whenever they wanted to.

James White, Montee Ball and Russel Wilson ran for 332 yards on the ground and combined for four rushing touchdowns.

The Hoosiers couldn't complete a pass to save their lives with the pressure they faced and Mr. Wilson had success even without Nick Toon.

The schedule is fairly outside of their huge road test at Michigan State next weekend.

The Badgers offensive line against the Spartans defensive line will be a treat to watch. Whoever ends up wining that battle will have the edge in the game, however, Kirk Cousins needs to beat the Badgers secondary early and often.

No. 5 Boise State Broncos

4 of 5

Boise State 63, Colorado State 13

The Broncos were up only 35-13 at the half, but Kellen Moore threw touchdown strikes in the third quarter to come out with a huge 63-13 lead.

Moore ended the day with four touchdown passes and 338 yards. Doug Martin went off totaling 201 yards and three touchdowns and DJ Harper even found the end zone twice for 63 yards on just eight carries.

Nine different Broncos receivers hauled in a pass and the Boise State's offense simply unstoppable. They have nobody on the schedule that may hold them under 40 points, so now it's just the waiting game.

Boise State needs a few heavyweights to lose for any chance at a possible BCS National Championship, but an at-large bid is certainly a great possibility.

No. 3 Oklahoma Sooners

5 of 5

Oklahoma 47, Kansas 17

Landry Jones did not have any troubles against Kansas throwing for 363 yards and three touchdowns. Ryan Broyles broke Purdue's Taylor Stubblefield for most career receptions (317) totaling for 217 yards and 2 touchdowns on 13 receptions. The rest of the offense did not do too shabby totaling for 610 yards.

Dominique Whaley ran for 165 yards on 30 carries and a touchdown as the Sooners accounted for 247 yards rushing against a suspect Kansas run defense.

The Sooners defense held their ground limiting the Kansas offense to just 252 yards. There was no doubt that Oklahoma was going to hang on after the Jayhawks had a few quick three-and-outs right out of the gates to start the second half.

Kansas State awaits in a few weeks, but who else can come close to challenging the mighty Sooners? A battle at Bedlam may determine their BCS chances and the Cowboys of Oklahoma State will attempt to run the table as well in what should be one of the most exciting games of the season on December 3rd.
