BCS Rankings Week 8: Robert Griffin III's Brilliance Won't Keep Baylor in Top 25

Michael DixonOct 15, 2011

Robert Griffin III is having a brilliant season. He was brilliant again on Saturday, throwing for 430 yards and three touchdowns against one interception.

Griffin III is worthy of at least being considered a Heisman Trophy candidate, and he may actually be the front-runner when you look at his gaudy numbers.

But there is one problem at Baylor.

As great as Griffin III is, he can't do it on his own. Baylor's opponents are averaging more than 30 points per game against the Bears. Even those numbers are dramatically altered by a shutout against a lowly Stephen F. Austin team.

Today's game is a perfect example of why Baylor shouldn't be ranked. Despite the above numbers from their quarterback, the Bears still lost the game. Actually, despite those numbers, Baylor still lost convincingly—55-28, to be exact.

They are now 4-2, with their two losses coming against by far the two best teams on the schedule, although an opening week win against TCU was impressive.

In each of those two losses, Griffin performed well enough to win. But in each of those two losses, the defense let Baylor down in a big way.

Don't get me wrong. The Bears have two more games against potential National Championship contenders, which will not be comfortable games.

In two weeks, they travel to Stillwater to take on Oklahoma State. On November 19, they host Oklahoma. If I was a fan of Oklahoma or Oklahoma State, I would not be at all comfortable with seeing Robert Griffin III on the other team.

But today's loss really showed some holes in Baylor's team. They are led by a magnificent player, maybe the best in the country. But they significantly lack the balance to be worthy of a Top 25 ranking.

For this year, Baylor will have to settle for being a team that can ruin the BCS or National Championship hopes of someone else. But anything more than that is really overrating the Bears.
