BCS Rankings 2011: Latest Boise State Blowout Still Won't Help BCS Title Hopes

Thad NovakOct 15, 2011

In a development slightly less surprising than Saturday following Friday, the Boise State Broncos chalked up another blowout victory.

The latest victim was Colorado State—in the first-ever MWC conference game for BSU—who fell 63-13 at home Saturday night.

Boise has beaten all six of its opponents this season by at least two TDs, and they’re a good bet to retain (though not improve on) their No. 5 national ranking.

Unfortunately for the Broncos, the 500-pound gorilla of the BCS will once again leave them out in the cold when the national championship is contested.

Boise State has tried to play a reasonable schedule. They faced a ranked Georgia team on opening night, and they’ve moved to the Mountain West from the even lowlier WAC.

For all that, they’ll never match the strength of schedule of an SEC or Big Ten club that plays multiple ranked opponents in the course of conference play. The second-best team in the MWC, the former BCS busters from TCU, is 4-2 overall and unlikely to claw its way back into the rankings.

In practical terms, the Broncos’ schedule is pretty much as damning as a loss where the BCS is concerned. A presumed 12-0 Boise squad is more like 11-1 when it comes down to picking teams for the BCS bowls.

Clearly, if any team comes out of the SEC unbeaten, it’s going to deserve a shot at the national title. With Oklahoma a good shot to run the table in the Big 12, and Wisconsin in a similar position in the Big Ten, the odds of even a one-loss team playing for the national championship are slim.

Worse, it will take more than a couple of upsets to save the Broncos’ chances. Even if both Alabama and LSU suffer losses by season’s end, it’s essentially a given that one of them would play for the championship before an undefeated Boise State.

If, somehow, no other team finishes with a perfect record, there’s an outside chance Boise State would play for the title. Any other result, though, and the Broncos are headed to another BCS bowl while two power-conference squads play for the national title.
