Michgan Football Uniforms: Wolverines One-Up MSU with New Unis

Ian BergOct 15, 2011

Michigan unveiled new throwback style uniforms against Notre Dame earlier this season marking the first game under the lights at the Big House. The Wolverines are at it again as they launched another set of retro uniforms today in their contest against Michigan State.

Michigan State unveiled new uniforms today as well in their attempt at a throwback with solid deep green uniforms and gold helmets. It was a diversion from the regular green and white ensemble that has become the mark of the Spartans since the 1930’s.

Changing uniforms has become the norm lately with Nike Pro Combat series and the new Under Armor uniforms, but Michigan  sparked a new beginning with Adidas.

Michigan State was excited to be wearing their new Pro Combat uni’s but Michigan surely took the wind from their sails when they appeared wearing a second round of special uniforms.

The retro uniforms for Michigan today feature a large number on the front and back and displays the distinct ‘’M” on the front of the jersey and pants. They also have continued to wear their numbers on their helmets since the “under the lights” game against Notre Dame. A tradition left untouched since the 1960’s.

So what did this accomplish for the Wolverines? Did simply adding new uniforms again to the locker room give them a competitive advantage?

On a number of fronts the answer is a glaring yes. Walking out in front of Michigan State and ruining their uniform coming out party does something to morale. Yes, something as simple as a uniform change can make a difference in the mentality of a game and the scope of the contest.

It was a great move by Michigan to rain on the coming out parade that the Spartans had planned for their bitter in-state rival. Michigan, looking to stay undefeated, saw an opportunity and ran with it as they stole the show.

Look for this buzz to leave a lasting impression as it isn’t often that Michigan makes major changes to their tradition. This season the changes have been needed and have made a wealth of difference in the team’s outlook.

Any spark is a good spark and the return to dominance is something that the Michigan faithful have been waiting on. Even the purist of traditionalist amongst the Michigan faithful has to recognize how good this season’s changes have been.

Bring on the changes and the wins as Michigan football has returned.
