Jackie Battle: He Must Prove He Is Able To Continue Playing at a High Level

Farzin VousoughianOct 15, 2011

Kansas City Chiefs fans have been talking about Jackie Battle after Sunday's win over the Indianapolis Colts.

Battle carried the ball 19 times and rushed for 119 yards to give the Chiefs their second victory of the season.

While Dwayne Bowe and Steve Breaston shined on Sunday, Battle helped the Chiefs seal the victory on the final drive of the game.

On a second-and-9 play at the Kansas City 42-yard line with 2:21 to go in the game, Matt Cassel handed the ball off to Battle. Battle took advantage of a hole constructed by the offensive line and gained 24 yards, placing the ball in Indianapolis territory.

Two plays later, Battle received another handoff and ran to the left to gain nine yards. Battle's carrying ability allowed Cassel to pick up a first down on a quarterback run, allowing the Chiefs to run off the clock and win the game.

Many football fans have picked up Battle for their fantasy league. Chiefs' fans are ecstatic and expect Battle to continue playing well.

Do you guys remember Kolby Smtih? Hearing all the excitement revolving around Battle is reminding me about Smith. Smith, a fifth-round draft pick in 2007, started six games for the Chiefs during his rookie season.

In his first career start, he went up against the Oakland Raiders, who were ranked 31st in the league against the run. Smith ran all over the Raiders 31 times for 150 yards and two touchdowns, despite the loss. Smith also had more rushing yards than any player in Week 12 of the 2007 season.

But in the end, Smith never had a 100-yard rushing game after doing so against the Raiders.

Keep in mind, Battle ran for 119 yards against a 32nd ranked rush defense in the Colts.

I'm not here to say Battle can't do it again. My guess is that he won't.

My point is, don't get so excited for just one game, especially against a team ranked last in the league in certain categories. If you're a fantasy football fanatic and have Battle as your starter when the Chiefs visit the Raiders, be prepared to be disappointed.

We'll see what Battle is made out of against the Raiders next week, who are ranked 23rd against the run.
