Top 5 Clever Topics for so Very Clever Guy's Girls Heading into Week 7
Welcome to week seven! It’s getting chippy in college football. Now is the time for the undefeated teams to start dropping the ball as we get closer to the finish line (National Championship).
There should be more movement in the polls, and the Heisman watch will begin heating up as the contenders collect losses.
It’s a big weekend for me, because my alma mater plays my all-time favorite team. Michigan State takes on the University of Michigan in one of the biggest rivalry games in college football. Go BLUE.
Here's an idea—if you don't plan on spending time with the guys today, stop by your local cigar shop and pick up some hand-rolled cigars and drop them off to the guys. Don't stay—this is called "inviting yourself."
If you can find a cigar shop that rolls with Connecticut wrappers, this is considered premium.
Rock Star Gift for the Ultimate College Football Fan
1 of 5I want to start this week’s article with a hint for So Very Clever Guy’s Girls looking for the rock star gift for their college football-worshipping man. The 77th Annual Heisman Memorial Trophy Gala begins on the 10th of December in NYC.
Tickets are $600 each, and that includes the Gala and the VIP cocktail reception where you can mingle with past winners, bid on merchandise and absorb the majesty of the weekend.
I know what you are thinking. Hotels in NYC are ridiculously expensive—almost more than the tickets.
I have a hint for you. Jetsetter.com runs special rates for NYC, starting now and booking out through the end of the year. I’ve found some fantastic rates on gorgeous boutique hotels in the high $200s per night.
As with most travel, the sooner you book, the better. For your man who is more about experience over possession, this is a fantastic gift.
If the Voting Took Place Today? Denard
2 of 5OK, in the Heisman watch, the top six contenders are undefeated. The quarterback most likely to turn in a flawless season is Stanford’s Andrew Luck, whose only ranked opponent left on the schedule is Oregon on the 12th of November.
Now, obviously my clear-cut favorite is Denard Robinson of University of Michigan. Most would view the balance of UM’s schedule and see Nebraska on the 19th of November as the only hiccup—however, rivalry games have their own dimensions.
Emotion runs hot for UM/MSU and UM/Ohio State University, and although OSU is struggling and no longer ranked, it wouldn’t be the first time a favored team dropped one to their underdog rival.
UM needs to continue to play to win, and to keep the emotion out of it.
Game Day
3 of 5Here is the game day action you may or may not be interested in, and my picks.
Oklahoma State takes on the University of Texas, who are coming off a disaster against rival Oklahoma. Count on a win for the Cowboys.
Ohio State plays Illinois, and the Buckeyes are not likely to post a win.
No. 1 LSU will put the hurt on Tennessee this weekend, while Alabama does the same to Mississippi.
No. 24 (barely ranked) Auburn faces Will Muschamp and the Florida Gators. This will be a good game, and I’m inclined to take Florida.
Oklahoma is riding high after destroying the University of Texas in the Red River Shootout last weekend, and they are full steam ahead. Plan on a big win over KU.
If you are looking for Kirk Herbstreit, he will be hosting College Game Day for Arizona State versus Oregon. I’m taking No. 9 Oregon in this Pac-12 action.
Interesting game for two strong Texas teams: Texas A&M will take on another solid offense in the Baylor Bears. Defense will decide this game—you can expect high scoring.
A&M is going to have to pressure Robert Griffin III and try to throw him off his game, and Baylor is going to have to defend the pass better than they have been.
Does the NCAA Have Teeth or NOT?
4 of 5This just in. The NCAA has concluded (for now) their year-long investigation into the Auburn football program, and the allegations regarding star quarterback Cam Newton.
The allegations were that Cecil Newton (Cam’s father) shopped his son to Mississippi State for almost $180,000. The fact that he ended up at Auburn was suspect to the point where an investigation was launched to determine whether money changed hands to procure the powerhouse quarterback, who is now starting in the NFL with the Carolina Panthers.
I don’t believe for a minute that the investigation should have found Auburn blameless, and I will never buy the fact that Cam Newton was unaware of his father’s actions.
I am still planning on yet another vacant spot in the annals of Heisman Trophy records.
If you will recall, former USC running back Reggie Bush was forced to give his Heisman back after and investigation proved misappropriated funds changing hands.
The chances of this happening again are HIGH. Sad.
To Watch or Not to Watch?
5 of 5The most important thing that you need to know going into any given Saturday is that if you are not going to watch the game, do something else.
No one wants to listen to you chat about anything unrelated to the game.
Don’t get me wrong, the guys will do it—they will be talking about everything from the new godaddy.com commercial to hot dog eating contests, but DO NOT interject with why you switched manicurists.
You might not be invited back.
If you want to hang with the guys but patently do NOT enjoy football, feed them, be a great hostess and if you are lucky, they will keep coming back.
If you have no desire to do either, go hang with the girls. You must have tons of girl talk you are waiting to unload.
