Liverpool vs. Manchester United: A Loss Would Crumble Reds' League Title Hopes

Nicholas GossOct 15, 2011

Liverpool's slim chance of winning the 2011-12 Premier League title would crumble with a loss to rival Manchester United this weekend in Anfield.

The Reds are currently in fifth place in EPL standings, and sit six points behind United, who are ahead of Manchester City in first place on goal difference.

A nine-point lead would not be erasable for Liverpool, who lack the consistency needed to make a strong title push.

Liverpool has also battled many injuries this season, specifically to captain and midfielder Steven Gerrard—the most important offensive player on the team.

Despite having a small chance at the title, Liverpool striker Luis Suarez is not too confident of their chances.

He told The Mirror early this month:

"

We have no limit and want to stay in the top four. But winning the Premier League is now very difficult.

The main reason why it is so difficult is because the two Manchesters and Chelsea are unreachable. But we can win the Cups.

"

Despite the lack of confidence, Liverpool have the quality to win the league. The key is putting together consistent performances that the team can build on, because for the most part the Reds are a young squad. Very few of these players have won a league title.

Liverpool needs to win against Manchester United if they wish to keep their Premier league title hopes alive, because a loss would merely mean the goal is a top four finish, and the automatic UEFA Champions League qualification that comes with it.
