BCS Rankings 2011: Big East Expansion Means Great Things for Boise State
The BCS rankings will be released this weekend, and once again Boise State will not like what they see. That will all change when a proposed move to the Big East takes place.
At least for another year, Boise State will be forced to prove themselves by slaying the competition on a weekly basis, and then waiting and hoping an elite team stumbles at the top of the rankings.
It's a fruitless endeavor that is exacerbated this season as a bevy of top-tier programs remains unbeaten. When the BCS rankings are released, a Broncos team that devastates their lesser opponents will be farther down the rungs then they think they deserve.
It seems that they have finally found a way to make life easier as they are set to join the Big East, a conference that has struggled to stay viable as teams leave.
ESPN reports the Big East plans to extend invitations to, "Boise State, Air Force and Navy as football-only members, and Central Florida to compete in all sports."
The first order of business would be to increase the exit fee for programs planning on leaving to bigger and better conferences in the future.
The Big East doesn't want another TCU incident that saw the Horned Frogs opt for the bigger spotlight of the Big 12 ahead of their move out east.
It is not yet known whether the Broncos will agree to join the conference, as it would no doubt be a gamble on their part. The report asserts the BCS will determine which conferences get an automatic bid in 2013.
The thought is Boise State's inclusion would no doubt keep the Big East as one of them. However, if they fail to make the cut, the Broncos will have signed on to a conference that mandates they log thousands of extra miles per season without the benefit of an automatic bid.
It's a calculated gamble, but a gamble nonetheless. Boise State has the answer they have been searching for in their quest to be blessed as BCS-worthy.
There is nothing free in this world, so it comes with the aforementioned caveat. The answer for them is clear. If they want a solution to the constant frustration caused by the BCS polls, they need to take the Big East invite and never look back.
This is the only offered solution, and they need to take it.
