Fantasy Football: Should You Trade for Brandon Marshall or Trade Him Away?

John MillerOct 14, 2011

Here was what Brandon Marshall said about the Dolphins upcoming games vs. the Jets.

“I think the past four games have been tough for me, trying to control some things, and, hey man, I’m just going to let it out,” Marshall said of his emotions.

“I don’t care if I have two, three cameras on me. I don’t care if I have penalties. It does not matter; I’m going to let it all out. I don’t care what you guys write or what the commentators say. I’m just going to play football. That’s what I’m best at. I’m best when I play emotional. I’m best when I play with passion. You guys are going to see that on Monday Night Football. I don’t know if it’s throwing a football 15 yards in the bleachers, or getting a 15-yarder [penalty], or punting the ball and getting thrown out of the game. But something is going to happen. I’ll probably get kicked out after the second quarter.”

Now there's some good and some bad here for fantasy owners. Every owner wants to hear his player say that he will play like a "monster" this week. Of course, no fantasy owner wants to hear that one of his players has a goal to kicked out of his game this week.

Let's have some full disclosure here. I loved Marshall coming into this season. I thought that he would catch 100+ passes and be a PPR monster. The talent is still there for Marshall. And is Matt Moore THAT much worse than Chad Henne?

We saw what happened last season when the Dolphins had incompetent play at the QB position. Marshall went in the tank. There's a few things that scare me here. The primary worry I have is that the Dolphins are ready to go into "lost season" mode and will "tank" the season as much as they can to increase their odds of landing QB Andrew Luck.

I would wager that most Dolphins fans will be on board with that plan. But the Dolphins players? Not so much so. The players want to stay healthy and remain competitive. Most of them still have future contracts to worry about. And if/when Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano is fired mid-season? It's really not impossible that the Dolphins go 0-16.

But the Dolphins will have to pass all of the time, right? They will be down and just have to pass. So Marshall could be fine! Right?

Unfortunately, probably not. Other teams will key on Marshall and take their chances on Matt Moore beating them throwing to Brian Hartline and Davone Bess. Unless a coaching change prompts dramatic changes, the Dolphins will continue to be a run-first team.

It all starts this weekend, with Darrelle Revis all over Brandon Marshall. It wouldn't surprise me if Marshall does next to nothing for fantasy owners this week. And then what? His value will be depressed from what it is right now. With all his talk about being a "monster", maybe you can sell him for 90 cents on the dollar right now. Which is better than the 50 cents on the dollar you will get after Week 6.

Here are some WRs that I would trade Marshall straight-up for:

Jeremy Maclin

DeSean Jackson

Steve Johnson

Jordy Nelson

AJ Green

Dwayne Bowe

Santonio Holmes

Pierre Garcon

Marques Colston

I'm sure that you could also use Marshall to shore up another position on your roster if you have good depth at the WR position. The point is now is the time to strike. There's almost a ZERO percent chance that Marshall lights up Revis and the Jets, no matter what he says.

I repeat, Brandon Marshall has a better chance of getting ejected than he does of scoring 20 fantasy points. Hence, now is the time to trade him.

Have you already traded Marshall or did somebody make you an offer? I'm trying to trade Marshall in multiple leagues and I'm curious what kinds of deals are out there. Please use the comments feature or reach out to me on Twitter.

Good luck to all this week. Here's hoping Marshall somehow pulls off this "Monster" thing.
