NFL Trade Deadline: How Robert Mathis Would Help New York Jets

This Jets season has been a bit of a disappointment so far to say the least.  The Jets teams the past few years have always been known for their great defenses, but this Jets team has struggled mightily on defense. 

They are currently ranked 21st in points per game giving up 25 and ranked 26th in rushing defense giving up around 135 rushing yards per game.  

Robert Mathis would be a great addition to the Jets defense and could help them turn their season around.

He Gets After the Quarterback

Last year, Mathis had 11 sacks and has 77.5 career sacks total.  The Jets do not have anyone returning on their defense with double-digit sacks.

Mathis can spark this defense and force some turnovers by forcing the quarterback to fumble or forcing the quarterback to make a bad throw which turns into an interception for Revis and Cromartie.

He Can Help Stop the Run

Right now, the Jets do not have someone who can consistently penetrate through the offensive line and stop their running back behind the line of scrimmage. 

The Jets will face BenJarvus Green-Ellis one more time and will face Fred Jackson twice and need someone to help stop the run.

He Can Command a Double Team

The Jets defense does not currently feature anyone who can command a double team.  Mathis can be that threat as he is able to find ways to get to the quarterback. 

Having Mathis command that double team will open up an opportunity for the Jets to blitz on the opposite side.

He Can Anchor the Defense for a Few Years

Robert Mathis is 30 years old and at this point, does not seem to be slowing down. 

The Jets could rely on him to produce for a few more years and he could be one of the focal points of this Jets defense if he were to acquire him.
