WWE Writers Debating Between Two SmackDown Main Events to Headline WrestleMania

Imaan JalaliOct 14, 2011

Yesterday, I posted a news report from the Wrestling Observer Newsletter divulging WWE's plans through to WrestleMania 28.

One of the many bits was the revelation that the SmackDown main event at WrestleMania will likely pit Daniel Bryan against Randy Orton.

Now, according to the members-only section of F4Online.com, a different behind-the-scenes source says the Daniel Bryan-Randy Orton match is not definitive; in fact, it is one of two matches being bandied back-and-forth by the creative staff.

For whatever reason, the internal feeling is that only one of Daniel Bryan or Mark Henry should be in the SmackDown main event, not both. The two squaring off against each other has been brought up but rejected due to a perceived lack of mass appeal.

The WWE is a house divided, as one group of writers is arguing in favor of Daniel Bryan vs. Randy Orton (or Christian if the "Viper" doesn't turn heel by then). That being said, Christian is the quintessential dark horse candidate, whose inclusion is very unlikely.

On the other hand, an opposing contingent of the creative team is contending that Mark Henry vs. Sheamus for the World Heavyweight Title would make for a more marketable SmackDown main event at 'Mania.

Obviously, the Mark Henry-Sheamus proposal calls for the extended push of the deserving Henry, whose portrayal as an invincible juggernaut is one of the best things about WWE Television.

On the flip side, the Bryan-Orton/Christian option curtails the "World's Most Strongest Man's" run, but opens the door for another, that being the former "American Dragon," who has more than earned the opportunity to shine in the spotlight.

Which match would you like to see at WrestleMania 28?

Bryan vs. Orton? The dynamic should be interesting, especially if the latter plays the antagonist to the former's protagonist.

Henry vs. Sheamus? If one were to extrapolate into the future, it is possible Sheamus may even surpass CM Punk to become the No. 2 babyface in the company by April, making this power-clash between the two pit bulls quite the explosive encounter.

Bryan vs. Christian? In spite of the likelihood of this occurring being exceedingly slim, the matchup would garner little heat, anyway, unless Christian's character is thoroughly revamped after being put through the ringer by Orton.
