NFL Trade Rumors: Could D.J. Williams, Brian Dawkins to Eagles Actually Happen?

Ryan PhillipsOct 13, 2011

On Thursday, ESPN's Adam Schefter went on SportsCenter and gave a few trade scenarios he would like to see happen. One such possibility involved the Philadelphia Eagles sending a third-round pick in the 2012 NFL draft to the Denver Broncos in exchange for safety Brian Dawkins and linebacker D.J. Williams.

While speculation is fun, and Schefter was just throwing out deals he'd like to see happen, there is almost no way this one could possibly happen. The Broncos are not about to send away two starters on their already weak defense and receive nothing but a third-round pick and some salary help. The Eagles would have to give up much more than a mid-round draft pick to acquire both players.

Philly fans would probably welcome the return of Dawkins, who played the first 13 seasons of his 16-year career with the Eagles. He would add some stability to a secondary that has under-performed all season long. Meanwhile, Williams would add some much-needed punch to a woefully weak group of linebackers.

Denver would also get some salary relief in this scenario, as Dawkins is making $6 million this season and is due the same amount in each of the next two years. Williams is also due to make $11 million over the next two seasons before hitting free agency in 2014.

That said, the Broncos would never do this deal. The Eagles would have to include at least one potential starting defensive player in the deal and probably more picks than just a third-rounder.

Again, speculation is fun, especially around the trade deadline, but this deal has almost no chance of happening as it is currently proposed.
